I clearly didn't mean his „style" but the energy and personality he's giving in the behind the scenes content - that comment was based on the ep. 1 of their The Day Before docu on yt (I'm doing my homework before judging the book by its cover). the guy is simply hilarious and very high energy

I'm not in the position to judge his „stylistic" choices, but this whole situation just makes me wonder about the whole appropriation and appreciation thing going on and I'm really conflicted on that since a lot of things that are controversial in America are clearly not that big of an issue in other parts of the world. For example, when you take a walk down the Paris' streets, you will basically see a lot of African people who will offer doing braids on white people, or people of any color to be exact. I just think that people's attachment to the culture may be different and the issue comes from there. Some people like to share it and some like it to be exclusive. 
 

The thing is, hip hop is a subculture and it influences pop culture and music around the world for so many years now. Hip hop in my country changed drastically in the past 10 years. It's extremely American adjecent in almost every aspect. I bet it would cause a huge outrage in America, since we're talking about white people, but no one means any harm with this. It just means that people are influenced by the black artists and hip hop music and it finds resemblance in their art and way of living, especially among younger generation. 

 

On the other hand, isn't it kinda racist to portray some movements and hairstyles as exclusive for one race? I bet not all black people are influenced by hip-hop and carry themself that way. 

 

I understand why his „stylistic choices" are controversial. I knew there would be an issue right after the members' announcement and I felt the ick too (that's because I grew up in the internet and partake in the stan culture, I wouldn't have a clue about many issues if music and pop culture wouldn't be my interests). But then a quick scroll through his IG told me that he's been carrying himself like this for a few years now. If he's influenced by the culture, is practicing it (first in dance, then in rap) then it's actually something I can understand. Would I act the same? No. But it's always more questionable to me when idols throw away their whole personalities to become a perfect idol, ready to present ANY concept. In his case he decided to stay true to himself and I kinda applaud him for having the balls to do so. Are his choices questionable? Might be. Is he authentic to himself? I think so. Does he mean any harm? Especially to the black community? Not really. Like, he's clearly influenced by the hip-hop culture and the only different thing from some idols is that he's presenting the same stance off and on stage - his movements and actions aren't a costume or a concept. You want to tell me that it's better to wear hip-hop inspired clothes, throw hands and be edgy on the stage and then be someone completely different during interviews and free time? 

 

It's okay to abuse any other cultures on the stage, even when idols don't have anything in common with those, but the line is crossed when someone is clearly influenced by something and wants to partake in that? Kpop groups are basically using ANY culture that is currently „trendy" but throw it away the moment something new emerges. Aespa debuted in tulle skirts, went through a few different concepts and now they're on hip-hop thing, wearing hip-hop influenced clothes, grills and so on. And they will move on from that with the next era. I don't mind it, it is what it is. But I'm wondering where is the line? I think that the guy stayed true to himself and it may be controversial, but at the same time I don't think it's a costume and it's not something that people should be so triggered about, since he didn't cause or mean any harm and he clearly isn't mocking anyone.
