Rihanna's 'Breakin' Dishes' has seen a recent and steady surge in popularity. Yesterday it managed to eclipse all of her many hits and earn over 1.1 million streams. 

 

It appears that the GP miss Riri so dearly they've decided a 15+ year old album cut should be her next hit.

oh my god I think about this so much tbh like… I always wanna have one of her songs as my note of the day on instagram and it pisses me off how she's the ONLY person I stan whose music isn't accessible through instagram

This was actually supposed to be a single right after DSTM in early 2008. They ended up releasing take a bow and the album re-release instead because GGGB was kind of underperforming at the time. Especially in the US where ballads sold albums better than dance/pop singles (Umbrella/DSTM)

I'm shocked to learn the album was considered to be underperforming before the re-release. I suspect Umbrella dominating for as long as it did was somewhat of a double-edged sword when it came to the follow up singles.

 

Here in Aus DSTM was huge (it spent 4 weeks at #1), even Shut Up and Drive was a mild hit (peaked at #4).

The album was actually selling worse than A Girl Like Me in the USA. It reached 1m sold in February 2008 with 4 singles released. So they definitely needed something new since it was already in the 100s by June. It only reached #57 on the year end chart in 2007 but #21 in 2008. Australia is a weird case because Umbrella and DSTM were bigger than Take A Now/Disturbia yet it was higher on the yec in 2008. Those are the only two countries where it was really underperforming. It didn't do well in Asia but she was never big there to begin with. 
The album was selling well in Europe (her main market) before the re-release. Top 10 year end in the UK, Top 20 in Germany and some other countries. It was only low in Italy at #76

I mean I won't lie, It be good if she has her bloody Mary moment with this bop  anything from GGGB deserves to shine again tbh such a brilliant album
