At least with bomb/tank there were an element of shock

 

Flops have no expectations. 

In terms of how bad the album does it's:

Flop > Bomb > Tank

 

So

Witness = Flop

Smile = Bomb

143 = Tank

Witness bomb, Smile & 143 flops, Joker 2 ultra deluxe tank

I think I agree with this although shouldn't bomb and tank be swapped?

I've always thought tanking is when it starts well, but then flops into oblivion. Like that Nicki remix that debuted at #1, then fell out of the top 50 the next week or something

Flop is just an umbrella term for something that doesn't do well. It can be used interchangeably with the other two terms, but there are some key differences. For example, all bombs are flops, but not all flops are bombs.

 

A bomb is when something that had high hopes fails catastrophically.

 

Tanking is when something starts off okay/stable, then gradually or suddenly goes downhill.

To be fair, ''panned'' only refers to its critical reception. Something can be panned and a commercial success at the same time. Katy's albums between 2008-2013 for example

 

idk this is just my self dictionary speaking but
Flop in my mind is something that was expected, it was already known, the artist has been there before and will be there again, usually under the radar, it's not career damaging and the fans (and any listeners) are still happy with the album - Ava Max Diamonds & Dancefloors

A Bomb to me is when something has massive anticipation and expectations and it fails to meet that and underperforms as a result, usually comes with backlash and a massive ATRL discourse making fun of it - Katy Perry 143
A tanked project is sort of the middle ground, like when the artist could have managed the era better etc, but the music still met expectations, will get ATRL threads but it's not the end of the world for the artist - Katy Perry Witness

A flop is something that does so quietly. A bomb is like an explosion. Witness was iconic so it would be a bomb. Smile flopped as nobody knew about it. it just came, flopped, and left.
