Applause is not and has never been a good song. Roar may be generic, but Applause is downright nonsensical. The only ones interested in keeping this debate going are Monsters because they think that collectively creating some kind of revisionist history that Applause was better than Roar all along gives them a sense of validation lol.

Roar and I say this as someone who lacks taste.

I don't like Applause either. It's not bad but it's nowhere near her previous singles and DWUW is also much better. 

 

Roar was also more liked by the GP. I don't know if it's because it's got a more radio-friendly sound and Applause is more artsy but you cannot tell me Roar was complete trash when millions upon millions of people loved it.

OT: Applause was better since day one, Roar is literally Katy's worst hit, it makes me cringe every time I hear it.

I like Applause slightly better but all in all, they're both pretty mid in their discographies up to that point. Looking back, I think the concurrent release hype made the songs sound better than they actually were.

Never liked either, but only one of these bops has a special moment during the Eras Tour, so that one 

Applause was a grower for me. I never liked Roar. 

I voted for Applause since “neither” wasn’t an option.  Applause was a major letdown but Roar was just 

idk I always like the song roar better
