Chromatica was released 3 years ago today, after being delayed for weeks due to CoVID 19 and the initial rollout (Chromatica TV series, Coachella secret set, more videos....) scrapped. The album opened to great success first week with over 175M streams on Spotify (265M with YouTube), it peaked at #1 on Apple Music in over 77 countries and on iTunes in over 80 countries. Critically, the album was well received (the best Metacritic score for a Gaga album with a 79/100, all reviews acclaiming Gaga's return to her roots). As time went buy and Gaga's full disappearance (up until the VMAs in late August) from the spotlight to focus on handling her platforms to BLM activists and raising funds to battle COVID 19, the album didn't connect with the audience as much as was intended (4M global units SPS) and became a dark horse to people calling it a really bad album.

While not her best imo, it's still a good pop album just not taking risks enough and the early esthetics (Stupid Love and ROM) really felt like a step back from what Gaga tried to achieve with Joanne/ASIB. That later was corrected when during her SOLD OUT STADIUM tour, she served looks after looks while grossing $113M from 20 shows only and getting the highest attended concert of the decade for her Stade de France date (near 79,000).

 

Which song was your favorite on initial listen and what is it now? Do you think you got bandwagoned into thinking it was a bad album due to OGHs making fun of it? What didn't you like about it?

Mediocre as a pop album with a few highlights, horrid for Gaga standards. Soulless, sterile, massively lacking of her past genius musicality. 

The concept and bones are there, she just really didn’t take it far enough. ROM, SC and Babylon are great pop songs, the rest of the album just needed to be more experimental and cyberpunk as the aesthetic was

 

Stuff like SL and FW really drag it down and make it a way more basic dancepop album than it needed to be

It's a bad album if you're young. It's a good album if you're old. That's it.

 

Like THIS stomps  the album needed way more of wacky structure

Unpopular opinion, its a solid album. Its sonically and lyrically cohesive + her best visuals since TFM imo.

 

 #1 issue with this album are the poor single choices (outside ROM) and if they kept the original 90s house sound i.e. Free Woman demo it prob be more acclaimed.

Overall for a comeback pop album.. It was very disappointing 

I don’t think the album is bad at all. ROM, Sour Candy, Alice, Replay, Babylon are all excellent. 

It's over-hated honestly and overall a decent pop offering but let's keep it real now, it's not that great either.

 

Songs like "Plastic Doll", "1000 Doves" and "Free Woman" (sorry not sorry) are instant skips. The music kinda became dated upon release thanks to the overall lack of memorable production and mediocre lyricism. BloodPop and Lady Gaga don't really match well musically in my opinion. Conceptually the era also had much more to offer but because of a lack of promo and disinterest from Gaga herself, the era just wasn't executed properly.

no it's not that bad it's a great dance pop album that goes off in the gym and clubs, two places i wouldn't expect most atrlers at

most people thought it had a bit too many filler tracks and that she kinda phoned it in with the production except on a few songs, which is a fair criticism. but then some people act like it's the most basic and generic album they've heard and then you look at their faves discography and suddenly it makes sense...

yes that's why I applaud Renaissance, cause Beyoncé didnt get afraid to go full house on certain songs and own it

yes, it was her worst album.

 

Joanna is very bad but it was something new for her, she tried and I acknowledge 

Chromatica was her back to electropop/dance pop sound, something she was really good at it but it was just mediocre and basic, something on the level of Ava Max, no excuses

Who said it was bad let alone that bad? It's a good album with good reviews. Good but not great. 

It's a great album that ushered in the house music trend in pop
