Right? :rip: I’d never disrespect a legend like Lionel, and I get that it’s his best selling album, but it was essentially a collection of hit singles, whereas literally all of the other albums nominated that year had much more impact. Purple Rain was by far the clear winner IMO, with Born In The USA and She’s So Unusual tied for second. Private Dancer had less of an impact than those three sure, but it being Tina’s huge comeback still puts it ahead of Can’t Slow Down.

It's crazy how much time can change perspectives on things. I don't know how it felt for people in 1985, but knowing the impact Purple Rain had, I don't even understand how it could not win. But retrospective acclaim is a thing and some body of work just reveal themselves over time and so I wonder if at the time, Purple Rain was already seen like this massively important album in music history or not. 

 

Simply put, it's incredibly shocking that Purple Rain lost in our perspective now, but was it in 1985? Was it like a Lemonade vs 25 already or did it become that over time?

Obviously I can’t accurately answer as I wasn’t alive then, but simply looking at the few stats available from that time period, at least Purple Rain and Born In The USA were bigger by all margins except singles (which had never been a huge factor for the Grammy’s, at least certainly not back then), so it’s truly puzzling how they both lost out.

This moment will always be such a scream to me. They had Kesha up on stage for this empowering "Praying" performance to capitalise on the #MeToo moment and then the award went to the one male nominee in the category who wasn't even present at the ceremony :ahh:
