What if evermore was released before folklore?

Featured Replies

Evermore and Folklore is a critical comeback for Taylor.

Both are successful as well commercially, but folklore is more successful compared to evermore.

Taylor released folklore before evermore, what will happen to the success of evermore and folklore if evermore was released first?

Evermore would still be the underrated sister and folklore would be less acclaimed.

If evermore came first it wouldn’t change the quality of the record, and on average more people prefer folklore. So it would receive acclaim but I don’t think it would have made the same noise as folklore did. It also has a bit more pop elements so the shift isn’t as drastic as Lover to folklore (even though I’d argue evermore is the more alternative album). But if folklore came after evermore, it wouldn’t really be that shocking of a genre change and I don’t think as many people in the gp would have checked in.

folklore is folk-pop while evermore is more close to folk, so it’s not surprised that folklore is more accessible and will always be more successful

*evermore is better however

It just wouldn’t have worked. No way to know for sure how it would’ve played out but aside from narrative reasons it wouldn’t much sense, it also couldn’t come before folklore since it’s meant to be a record full of resolutions while folklore was very open-ended. But overall evermore is a bit less accessible and more alt/folk leaning than folklore, though I still think folklore is slightly better. Considering this anyway, evermore would’ve been slightly more acclaimed and folklore would’ve been slightly less acclaimed. So about even instead of the gap there was. Evermore wouldn’t have had the same effect that folklore did if released first.

Evermore would be rightly recognized as the superior sister and her very best album.

It's a little sad that it didn't happen that way, but I understand that Evermore could never really have come first and could never really have happened without Folklore. She'll get her flowers eventually, though - in the long run, at least critics, fans, and music enthusiasts will know the tea.

I feel like we said opposite things but imo Willow, gold rush, no body no crime, long story short, and both of the bonus tracks lean way more into pop territory than anything on folklore

unlike evermore, folklore has more commercial appeal.

I don't think it would go 4x platinum like folklore did

cardigan alone was an event with that bridge

folklore is the better album. It always has been.
