And yes, I believe it makes a difference. I feel when a single is first on the album, the rest of it sounds like giblits.

I like it most when the singles are spread throughout. I think the album and the track order should be finalized before singles are decided upon. Sometimes the singles do make sense at the beginning of the album though. 

There are many different ways in which single placements work and don't work depending on the album. 

 

For example:

 

Good - 1989 (tracks 2, 3, 6, 8, 9)

Bad - My Everything (tracks 2, 3, 5, 9)

 

these are both very similar while I think 1989 has a great tracklist flow and the flow of my everything is one of it's biggest weaknesses.

I don't know why, but I have a pet-peeve where I prefer lead singles be enmeshed in albums (so not the first or last song). I also prefer album title tracks be somewhere in the middle as well. There are plenty of records that I adore that don't adhere to my weird preference, so it's not a deal breaker by any means, just something I consider.

Singles (esp in debut albums) are generally within the first 5 tracks. For marketing purposes to display the most commercial pushing tracks.

My fav puts lead singles (and other potential singles) at the top of the tracklist. I do not know why. But I do prefer them in the first half but not necessarily the first track, I think it makes sense bc those songs are representing the project, they should lead you into it.

Britney’s leads have always been track 1 up until Circus. Since Femme Fatale, all her leads have been track 2 (although in one of Glory’s versions Make Me is track 3).

 

The singles by track number would go:

I hate when the first half of the album is pratically only its singles. About 90% of the time it means the rest is just filler material.

 

O.T.: I kinda love Medulla's single placements on the tracklist. Triumph of a Heart is excellent as a closing track and Who Is It is great in between the more experimental tracks

This has gotta be one of the most sporadic I've seen even w/o Bloody Smashy
