coming off of the Charli XCX penned smash Señorita duet, this experimental challenging pop song was released as the "lead" single from her then second album. What went wrong and why wasn't this as big of a hit as her previous song?

Too much screeching noise

i love this song but it was never gonna be a hit. also the fact that she released 2 songs as a lead at once probably didn't help 

It’s a bad song and she sounds even worse than usual on it.

Liar definitely deserved to smash but releasing both songs at the same time cannibalized their chances to do well.

Still obsessed with this song. And the Romance album in general 

The whole era was overshadowed by Senorita. And the dual release did not help. They then released another 3 singles before the album. It was a mess.

 

I stand by this: Liar/Shameless should've both come out Sept 5 still. But just as promo singles/album tasters. Liar music video should've been scrapped. And I would've officially launched the era with Anyone (the song given to Justin Bieber). Released that Oct 11 (the day Easy came out. Scrap the single releases of Cry For Me/Easy too) & performed it on SNL, EMAs, AMAs, Graham Norton. Had that song as the main single that was always performed, instead of her picking a new song each time she hit the stage. 

 

Then I would've kept post album plans the same (My Oh My as a single). So she would've only had like 2 proper radio singles from Romance: Anyone & My Oh My. 

 

I don't think the GP were really ready for Shameless in 2019. But thanks to TikTok, it's doing really well now.
