Of course SM is desperate for western success but those old men keep releasing weird songs that won't be appealing to GP easily.

I mean Superm existence is a proof of that, they are clueless about western market.

Agreed. Plus RV is SM's best performing act on Spotify by far...yet they are the only one that has never had international/U.S. distribution.

To a certain extent it makes sense why SM decided to push aespa/NCT instead of RV/EXO, I just think it was a bad call.

 

In a way, when EXO started to pop off it was before Kpop in the west truly felt like a possibility and when Red Velvet got their big hits they were already a somewhat old group who (at the time) seemed to be trailing behind BP/Twice in the fandom department.

 

Therefore they saw that BTS/BP were doing amazing numbers by having a very dedicated loyal fanbase. SM thought that they'd see more revenue if they started from scratch rather than elevating an already existing group to that level (which to be fair, feels true in the sense that groups that feel like a big deal in the west kind of feel that way from the beginning. If anything that's one of the biggest surprises about Twice's latest years)

 

Even if the core concepts are different, I feel there is some similarity between NCT/aespa/SuperM and BTS/Blackpink. I'm not saying they're copying them or anything, but it does feel that they were created as a response to their popularity. It's just that SM misunderstands what international Kpop fans are looking for in idols and their music. 

I think people overstate SM's obsession with breaking the west. Of course they want it, but if they were that obsessed they would've done when they had the chance with f(x) being kpop's alt pop darlings or red velvet scoring hit potential effortlessly.

The thing with aespa is different imo, what LSM really wants is to break into Hollywood, not the music scene. Which is why they are doing the smcu episodes and his constant talk about turning aespa lore into a movie.

crazy how SM sent aespa to Coachella, mediaplayed about them being the "first girl group to be invited xyz" , booked them gigs on GMA and Macy's parade, and sent them to American TV, but some SM stans will still claim they don't care about the U.S. or being popular overseas. That's more U.S. exposure than any other 4th gen girl group.

 

I think newjeans' success proves that the western kpop audience is big enough now that a group can blow up as long as they have the right sound. 

SM will be throwing their money into the void as long as they insist on trying to push aespa stateside.....with songs like girls

They saw NJ and LSF smashing and thought 'oh there's already too many successful groups out there, we better let ours flop or the market becomes too saturated'

SM does make some sacrifices for the culture and we love them for that. Though it’s obviously not done completely altruistically: they know their brand identity and they know they have a core following who likes the occasional left-field pop
