So basically, LSM refused to close the sale of his majority shares (18%) to Kakao, so instead the SM directors (illegally, if we believe LSM) created 9% of new shares and sold those to Kakao instead. This sounds...messy.

 

I want to know what @harrythevifan thinks of all this...doesn't look like it will end well at all.

Musically yes they fell off, but financially no. JYP is the only one of the big 3 that kept their "blue chip" financial status on the Korean market.

By "big 3" I mean the historical/prestige meaning. HYBE itself has only existed since 2021.

 

SM, YG and JYP have each had decades of continued success (since the 90s/00s) to be considered the "big 3" in terms of getting K-Pop to where it is now, creating the idol system, debuting many iconic idols etc.

 

In terms of actual finance/profit though, HYBE is already bigger than them.
