This is a good way of starting. But, curiously, I'm not as mad at SM the same way I was in 2019, when Xiumin and Kyungsoo enlisted in the middle of the year.

Because I understand they prefered to wait Baekhyun coming back from military and Kai having his own solo before start preparations. It's not like they were doing nothing, even though the plans could've been better.

But in 2019, most of the members were doing nothing on the first half of the year and SM could've booked their Exploration tour before the two members' enlistment, but the shows started when they were gone and we had a 6-member tour for their previous album that was ot8.

Yeah I don't know much about Exo bc I didn't get into them until the 2020's but this all makes a lot of sense. I'm mainly frustrated bc they've been able to meticulously plan SHINee comebacks around enlistments and EXO should be getting the same treatment considering they have a much larger fanbase and push more records. Every group at the company is being stifled in one way or another and its just been hard to enjoy all of the projects because of it. The company was READY to do a whole SuperM comeback in April before the aquisition war but they couldnt get an EXO cb together? its just really odd to me

all things aside, i always thought that 18 months was too much like it’s a bit crazy :deadbanana: 22 months as a social service worker is even crazier, just exempt those people from the military instead

we also have mandatory military service here but it’s just 6 months (which is still a lot but yeah :skull:)

I think its good for the performers health overall but its definitely a blow to their careers. I mean, look at SHINee for example. Pre-Enlistment they were all dealing w Jonghyun's passing and that period of rest and work outside of Idol life allowed them to really come back stronger. Maybe not as performers (tho Key has only gotten better at dancing), but they seem to have a renewed vitality and interest in their career overall. Hopefully Taemin's enlistment helped him as well.

I do feel really bad for Kai even though I don't particularly like him or his music much. Can't imagine how awful it would be to have your entire normalcy ripped away and not even be given any sort of warning. That's honestly pretty damaging.

Exactly :skull: Like how many careers got ruined, how many relationships got broken (talking about ordinary people, not celebrities). Not to mention the army in Korea is infamous for bullying and abuse etc.

What do they do in there for 18 months anw :skull:

i get your point and agree to an extent but still 18 months is such a long time :emofish:

plus it’s harder for idols (known ones at least) since their privacies get invaded a lot (like g dragon being watched by others while showering)

idk if mandatory military service is good for idols(or really anyone's) health:rip: at least not for mental health

Taemin literally had to get treatment for depression because of the enlistment as military band (he had to change to social worker after that)

i think they might be sending them to north korean border or something :deadbanana:

xiumin for example was a part of DMZ (a unit that guards the NK borders)

I don't think it's good for their health. Maybe for the health of their skin because they can't abuse filler while there but it's terrible for mental health. Several male idols have come out about their recent struggle like that guy from Pentagon and Taemin.

Yeah that's gross. Obviously there's negative side effects and drawbacks and no mandatory service would be a net good. I think the sort of break period that comes with the service can be good but there's definitely obvious drawbacks with being forced into military service. I was more trying to refer to physical health because Male idols get that break to sort of recuperate but I didn't fully take into account mental health/harassment that could occur. I think it also speaks to larger issues about the pressures of the career of Idol life can have though esp when they have to fit in to "normal" spaces.

I saw the reports about Taemin's mental health issues. It seems like he's doing a lot better now. I think there's been reports and speculation that he's had mental health and depression episodes for awhile but he was so hyperfocused on work (esp when he was the only active member of the group) so I can see how that could be really debilitating.

The Kai thing is so gross, and people making fun of an idol for being so open with their emotions is... weird. But I guess when you stan a group of robots, emotions make you mad. Like, he knew he had to enlist and he was getting prepared for that, but to tell him last minute that he now has to enlist next week is cruel. Hybe spent years lobbying the Korean gov't to try and get BTS an exemption and wasn't able to. This idea that BTS is "proudly" serving is a joke. :rip: At least they were able to plan accordingly and enlist when they wanted to. If BTS had been given a last-minute notice like this, Armys would've stormed the Korean government just like the MAGAs.

He’s literally 4 months overdue. He was already on borrowed time.

Did he think the law just didn’t apply to him or something? It’s not BTS’ fault that EXO didn’t “greatly enhanced the image of Korea both within the nation and throughout the world” enough to warrant a deferral.

We aren't dragging kai, It's more about exo-losers pretending like their faves are so almighty and rational while BTS members are crying babies. Twitter and this thread CONSTANTLY drag BTS and Armys for the stupidest things on the daily (someone told them to go to hell for literally no reason today?) so its quite rich that you expect us to not call out the hypocrisy in situations like these. No one said BTS is "proudly" serving, it's quite obvious no male idol actually wants to go (except Taecyeon maybe) :rip:

Literally :cm:

J-Hope is even serving a year earlier than he has to. EXO-ls have always been so bitter.

I think mandatory military service can be good in a certain sense, but in a highly competitive capitalistic cutthroat society like South Korea, it can be more damaging than good tbh.
Plus, if it was just everyone following rules and staying their own boundaries, it would be actually a nice lesson on discipline and routine and stuff…..but the abuse of power by the superiors is so well-known in the Korean society and even more in the military. This show tried to show a little bit of that and the long lasting effects of that stuff on a person’s psyche. (I know there are plenty other movies and shows but this one’s a recent one).

Plus the way male idols are not generally seen as “cool” among that demographic/field, who knows what they go through for all those months.

what in the randy blue twink in your avi, such a cutie. who is that?

He's Bright Vachirawit, a thai actor :gaycat3:

BTS spent years sucking up to war criminals alongside SK politicians for them to end up cleaning bathroom floors next to EXO, yeah SK defence don’t think they are that important either :bam:

Sucking up publicly on camera, we could all guess what they were doing privately lmaoooo

also I know I’m the only one who wants this and it’ll flop, but I need a proper Yeriana solo before the next contract renewal is upon us :'(

She'd do okay with a cute R&B/pop demo I think.

I don't think a group comeback is likely this year, especially with Joy being out for months. I'm guessing Wendy will have a comeback and maybe Irene will get her debut, which to be honest, is really overdue now.
