Shakira refuses to settle with prosecutor, will stand trial

Featured Replies

Latin superstar Shakira has rejected a settlement offered by the prosecutor in her 14.5 million euro Spanish tax fraud case and is now a step closer to going to trial, her media team said on Wednesday.

The Colombian singer – who has sold more than 80 million records worldwide with hits such as “Hips Don’t Lie” – has always met all of her tax obligations, a statement said. She considers the case “a total violation of her rights,” it said.

“The singer is fully confident of her innocence and therefore does not accept a settlement,” the statement said.

The terms of the proposed settlement were not disclosed.

The prosecutor’s office in Barcelona did not reply to a request for comment.

Shakira is accused of failing to pay up 14.5 million euros ($14.7 million) in tax income between 2012 and 2014, a period in which Shakira’s representatives say she did not live in Spain. read more

Shakira says even though her legal team disagreed about the alleged debt, she paid the 17.2 million that the Spanish tax office claimed she owed so she has had no outstanding debt with the tax authorities for many years.

The court still has to formally send her to stand trial and set a date.

This chick is so effing stubborn. Pay that ish move to your beautiful mansion in Miami, refocus on music gives us that massive world tour you keep promising and move on. What the hell? this ish is annoying at this point. She co-owns an island with richard gere an island for crying out loud! is not like she can’t Pay. Love her, but she did spend a lot of time chasing the pig all in love and stuff, so she did spend a lot of time out there, if they’re fighting this they must have valid precedents. Just saying.

Xabi Alonso did what she did and won. I think this isn’t just about money. She is standing up for herself and is making a statement she won’t let them bully her. We’ll see if it works out for her. Either way, the GP always sides with her.

All this drama for 14m? She could book a couple of stadium dates and recover all that money.. also move tf out of these socialist ass European countries and go somewhere where u don't need to pay much tax

This whole meltdown and for what? She already paid.

This would be the criminal investigation for tax fraud, as that is both a crime and a civil (which would not prospect as she paid what she allegedly owed to Spain in taxes) issue.

:skull:

I don’t know much about tax law but I feel like her case was a lot more blatant than the cases of all the footballers. They paid most of their taxes but had issues with the image rights while she initially didn’t pay at all. I wish she would just settle and put this behind her :gaycat6:

she should stop lying that she lived in Bahamas while she was all the time in Spain

There must be something that we don’t know because she's been dragging this for almost a decade :rip:

Anyway, good luck with putting the most beloved artist in the spanish-speaking world on trial.

Yeah, but she paid only for the first half didn’t she ? This in question is for the remaining years up to when she gave birth to her first kid when she established residence in Barcelona no? I mean I could be mistaken I could care less im just waiting for the tour.

im sure she will come out triumphant though she has some of the best lawyers, she’s been sued before for worst things and has come out winning. All I was saying is she could pay it and focusing on and leaving Spain behind.
