It’s been strongly rumored that Ru is only missing one season because the filming clashed with the book tour schedule. Given that it’s the weakest of the franchises he films he probably decided that this was the one he’d have to miss. They will be featuring some previous contestants and winners as guest judges.

The book tour is happening right now so I'm assuming the season has just started filming, correct? It wouldn't make sense if production wrapped up last year.

I think the season started filming recently (based on one of the guest judges being in New Zealand) but it generally only takes a month - month and a half to film.
