I keep seeing discourse around her supposedly MAGA boyfriend. As far as I know, their relationship is casual, so is it really worth catching this much heat? Getting hate for something you did is one thing, but getting hate because of something your boyfriend did is so unnecessary. Does she really have that much goodwill to waste on this boy?

She needs to learn how to get the D on the low. Like girl we know he ain't a serious thing.

I also feel like she lowkey is networking for her brother (hockey player)

Second on the lineup at Lolla. She's a main pop girl your honour. Meanwhile, the Lolla sub was so sure that she's not big enough to headline and she's second on the lineup. I love when Tatiana proves

Why did I think of this too. She's trying to secure Tucker a spot in the NHL. I respect it

This! I lowkey don't care who she's dating, but she needs to be smarter. if you're going to catch smoke for your bf at least let him be super hot. People can forgive a girl being dumb for a super hot guy lol. Not someone who looks like he could be her younger brother. Not to mention getting disrespected by the weird misogynistic hockey fans.

he's not really MAGA anyway is he, he's a bit of an assh*le but that's her type i guess (i feel like sabrina is much better at keeping these things quiet unless she's got an album coming out)

Tbh it doesn't matter whether he is or isn't. He's perceived as MAGA and she was already on thin ice after the morgan collab and the olympics ad. The last thing she ever should have done was have a public relationship with someone who was photographed with Trump and laughing at one of his lame jokes. If anything, the easiest way to clear her own allegations was to publicly sever ties with him after that incident.

As dumb as I think performative outrage for some of these things are, they have the potential to do real damage. I get risking outrage for a no 1 hit, or even an NBC cheque, but for a relationship that wouldn't even last the year? It makes no sense. Sidenote, but it seems like Olivia has publicly distanced herself from Tate since this all happened.

been listening to the first pussycat dolls album a bit recently and

sports car doesn't sound all that much like buttons

it does a bit but it's no big deal, doesn't have all that eastern styling at all for one thing

i think they sound alike but it's not the direct copy people make it out to be. Buttons was definitely on the moodboard tho.

Ryan has said he's really good at getting close to an inspo song without directly interpolating or sampling. I saw an interview where Nicole was kinda salty about it haha. I wonder whether there were any credit conversations.

Also this may be controversial but IMO sports car is the better song, and it's not even close

oh absolutely, buttons is probably the weakest of the big PCD songs for me? not nearly as good as beep or waitaminute

She's released new music in September every year since 2022. But I hope she has a comeback before then so she can stomp during the summer.

Hopefully T8Palooza slays so we can get T8chella

Idk, it irks me that artists with much less success than her seem to have much more industry clout when it comes to certain things.

The fact that she hasn't been booked for Coachella yet, while Benson, Sombr, Katseye, and A****** all got top-5 billing on the lineup in their breakout year, is so irritating. Same with things like major magazine covers. Pretty much all the girls except her have been on the cover of an international Vogue. Benson Boone and A****** got a Rolling Stone cover before her. Even her Met Gala debut was so long overdue. Gracie and Conan made their debut years before.

The level of visibility she has is so disproportionate to her success because of this, and it all feeds into things like Grammy voting. The industry refuses to legitimise her for some reason. She has to absolutely stomp commercially to get the same opportunities that are handed to anyone with a semi-viral song, and she still gets less than they do. It's all so puzzling. People have this insane idea that she has a major industry push when it's literally the opposite.

For a long time, I thought it was something she wanted for herself because she is so busy in her own world, but yeah it does seem like they arent giving her dues. A is getting all of those things because people are desperate for a britney pastiche and they were mad that Tate's influence from her had a bit more class and she did her own thing with it and quickly left it, meanwhile A has zero shame about how little she brings to the table and forces it down people's throat for clout (those ugly & embarrasing pap walks....), that is why they gush over her, they think she's more punk than she really is.

I honestly want Tate to continue doing her own thing because she seems to have an incredibly loyal fanbase that is willing to go with her to any new direction she wants to explore (not everyone has that, especially tethers with no discernable identity....) as well as confidence in her place in the industry, like she seems to generally be a reclusive and nice lady with zero bad intentions in her bones. I think its a good thing that she doesnt invite controversy into her image and brand and minds her business. (lets ignore the bozo MAGA men that circle her please thank ya!)

Agree with all this and it's not even just A. Every girl who does a cute two-step gets praised to high heavens and they always have to prop them up by bringing Tate down. I'm seeing this happen with Adela too. I'm sure Pitchfork will give her debut a higher score than any Tate album and include a paragraph shading Tate. It's so predictable. It's like the industry resents the fact that she's successful on her own terms and they keep trying to create rivalries with these girls that will never be on her level.

This! She has an incredible loyal fanbase that will show up for her no matter what so she has a freedom to make whatever kind of music she wants. The rest of the dancing girls have to release bops or no one cares. On the bright side the fact that she doesn't have the full machine behind her makes her success so much more impressive. She's been able to create her own space in the industry. It just sucks that she doesn't get her due.

Also this! The girl just wants to release music, go on tour and mind her business. It's insane the amount of negativity that she generates for someone that seems so genuine and nice.

the industry and critical establishment are interested in people with more obvious artiste vibes (which - as addis*n has so often proved - are easy enough to buy and sell) but it's never been something tate's been that bothered about, not because she doesn't have her own lane to some degree (she's a great performer and has distinctive character as a writer) but just that it's not a world that she knows how to work or is very interested in learning about

i mean, i've always thought that she isn't seen in the kind of light that she should deserves to be but also that if you don't play those kind of games then you can't be surprised when you don't win those very specific prizes? like, the stuff that gets talked about in this thread a lot - the incoherent image, the bad album shoots, the unwillingness to manage her online discourse - all have a cost in the end

and a lot of that i put down to the people around her and the inability of some of them to see her as more than quite a cheap commodity, which she's not going to be able to do all that much about as a young woman who doesn't get taken seriously enough. but i also think if she had the kind of drive twds dealing with that that she obviously has twds other parts of her career - and it's clear that she takes the music and performance much more seriously than her wider image - then it might have done some good or at least plugged a few more glaring holes

I think this is true when it comes to the way she's perceived by critics, but there's still a strange disconnect when it comes to media coverage, festivals, fashion editorials, brand deals etc. No one thinks of Katseye or Benson Boone as artistes and they have no problem booking festivals or in the case of Katseye, repping major brands and being on the cover of major magazines. Seeing the way the industry responded to Katseye is eye opening because they have all the « credibility issues » she does on a worse scale. They are a manufactured group with zero creative input or agency, releasing brainrot music, yet every door is wide open for them. I guess money talks but I'm not convinced even a mega budget can solve this problem for Tate.

I was listening to the billboard greatest pop stars podcasts, and one of the hosts said there was pushback about having Tate on the list of greatest pop stars of 2025. If there's even friction about recognising her on a list based on commercial performance something is very wrong. It's like she's not deemed important enough to mention even when it's based on objective stats.

It's also interesting when you consider that her team is very connected. She's managed by the Azoff family - the same people that got Harry Styles and Lizzo general field Grammy wins against major competition. The fact that they couldn't even get a SCTW pop nomination really made it clear to me that there a hurdle with her that they can't overcome.

I agree that some of this is self inflicted based on all this, and she should take control of all these gaps but I get the sense that even if she got a handle of this aspect of her career, nothing will change.

This is also so true unfortunately. It's clear to me that even her label doesn't take her seriously as an artist and are just trying to milk whatever they can from her as long as it lasts. Even her team is clearly not approaching her career with a long term view.

yeah i don't really disagree with this, it's one of those things where i think "well she really doesn't need to be doing xyz" but also, those doors are open to some people and just slammed shut to others and she's always been in the latter category. there is also a part of me that thinks she understands this and has decided it's not worth bothering about which i kind of admire, but also, she does clearly want that level of success too so there's a tension there

i think in america she still doesn't really have the big numbers quite so much tho? that podcast annoyed me because i felt like it was steering her down a certain path with regards to her being a bit of a britney knock-off and i thought that there were people on that panel who should have known better, but also she did only manage one top ten hit off the album when i think there were four or five over here, the album did well but it still wasn't quite in MPG territory, there is a sense that she's still not quite in the top tier

i think the thing about about katseye is that they're a bit of a plaything for their writers and producers (which is obvs no shade on them, i think they're a lot of fun in a very silly way) and so critics esp can take the kind of detached view that they'd take of other manufactured pop music like early britney or rihanna and engage with them as performers. my honest feeling with tate is that her crime was to be understood early on to be slushy music for teenage girls and that's always going to be hung around her neck because the industry still really despise their biggest market

Interestingly, I think those doors were initially open to her. When she debuted, she had the full weight of the industry behind her. She was on every artist discovery program and every artist to watch list. Her debut was positively reviewed. NYT gave her debut an 80, which I can't imagine now. She had features in Nylon, Elle, Harper's Bazaar, Seventeen, Cosmopolitan. She played more festivals in 2021 than now. There was a lot of hype around her being the next big thing. Her songwriting was praised and compared to Billie, Lorde, Olivia and Taylor. There's a Stereogum article in 2021 about her being the missing link between Billie and Olivia that said YBMF was better executed than driver's license. That was a big statement to make then, but any writer who says something like that now would be massively booed. I think the industry response to her changed after the online discourse around her grew loudly negative.

Absolutely, I think she realises what's at play and has adjusted her expectations accordingly. It's interesting; she obviously still wants that recognition, but I respect the fact that she's not actively angling for it. I really enjoyed how she handled her one Grammy nomination. There was a level of performed nonchalance that I found amusing.

I'll say she's bigger in US now than UK chart wise. I think SCTW was undeniably a MPG era in the US. Regardless of peak, sports car was one of the most consumed 2025 songs. There's also the MW collab, which had a better US chart run than Greedy. Then T*t for Tat, revolving door, just keep watching, and the album being more stable than Mayhem and MBF in 2025. Her tour gross in general, but especially in US was also MPG territory.

It's interesting, there's this revisionist narrative that she's only a performer. Yet she's not engaged with like other performers and is held to a higher standard.

yeah actually this feels right , i remember going back and reading a lot of print interviews and reviews from that era and even when they're not that keen on her they always take her seriously (tho stereogum of all people weighing in feels hilarious in retrospect). a lot of emphasis is placed on perceived "authenticity" these days, ofc the irony here is that there's a very real sense in which she became more authentic going from the olivia knock off sound to being a dancing pop star but the coding of "she's doing a sad ballad with a piano/guitar" vs "she's wearing a push up bra and doing a dance routine" is still seen in a very specific light in some circles

12 hours ago, Sharon Stone said:

yeah, there is a real sense with quite a lot of pop stars (including some who code a lot more obvs in terms of authenticity, eg gracie with her aaron dessner productions etc) where the word goes around - "we just don't like them" - and everything else follows from that

I've watched all of Ryan Tedder's interviews with all the songwriting podcasts, and I just watched one of Dan Nigro, and it's like he's the anti-Tedder. He's so refreshingly focused on drawing out the creativity of his artists, and making great songs, not 2 minute jingles. I can't help but think how different the long-term trajectory of Tate's career would be if she had found a single key collaborator early on like Dan, Finneas or Joel Little, rather than having to do the speed dating thing and ending up in the hands of a shameless hit chaser like Tedder. I'll never understand how her original team saw a 14-year-old writing solo songs that were resonating strongly and decided that the best way to execute her career was to have her jumping from different camps of writers and producers to the other.

It's sad to look at the origins of her career and realise the vultures around her never had her best interests at heart from day one. She was 14 with one viral YouTube song, taking label meetings and somehow ended up in the clutches of RCA before she even saw herself as an artist. And it was RCA that helped her find her first managers, so they had full control of the direction of her career from day zero. By the time they signed her, she had multiple viral songs on YouTube that they could have repurposed as her major label debut. I remember thinking there was such a missed opportunity to have her on Ellen singing those songs she wrote herself in her bedroom. They could have introduced her to the world as a promising young singer-songwriter. Instead, they gave her a Billie reject and debuted her as a Billie clone. Same with the Britney comparisons that now follow her like a plague. They didn't need to be so heavy handed with the Britney references in the Think Later era. It's such a lazy approach to marketing and yes it works, but in the long term, it just gives her more of an uphill climb to establish her own identity.
