If RCA really, thinks that they are more incompetent than I thought. Because there's not enough data to support that that conclusion yet. At the very least, they should make physicals available and let's see the result. As of now we can't say for certain whether or not she can move a lot of physicals because they've never properly tried.

Yeah but him being the selected reviewer in the first place meant the guardian were happy to pan her lol. A different reviewer wouldn't have been that harsh. It felt like Fantano really wanted to jump in and pile on after petrides did. He probably wouldn't have given her the time of day before that. P4K was positive in their review of her debut. They obviously shifted their perspective on her in response to the online criticisms which they always do. Petridish opened the door to overly snarky and negative commentary of Tate. Critics were tamer in their criticisms before him, and overall mainly positive. He made her the kind of artist that's safe to pan harshly. That's the point i'm trying to make. I don't disagree about the why, but the fact is it does shape the narrative, and it differently did damage to the reception of the album, and the perception of Tate in general. No one cared that petrides and Fantano typically review pop that way. No one cared that it was well received by other critics. It's just the reality. A few rogue critics can materially shape the conversation about an artist. It makes the whole thing kind of hollow.

Absolutely. I think the one thing that makes the Tate X Tedder partnership work is that he knows exactly what will do well commercially, and he pushes her in that direction. As long as she works with Tedder, she will at least have a single that does numbers on each album. She'll never have a true flop album with him. Look at what happened with the deluxe when he took a backseat. He is so chart obsessed and clued in, he knows the exact trends in music at any given time.

Nah Guardian panning her so strongly was kind of a shock. She was generally well received in her debut era, especially by the UK publications and even Pitchfork. That 2 star Alexis Petridish review was like a grenade to the album campaign lol. He went so hard on the album and even on her place as an artist that everyone suddenly came out of the woodwork to criticise the album and her. I remember the immediate shift in the discourse around her. I'm convinced that Pitchfork and Fantano panning was in response to the Guardian. Even though there were really only 3 negative reviews for think later, they strongly shaped the narrative. I do agree on all the other points re production and the fact that TM4 will not be as unfocused or uneven as think later no matter the sound.

In my opinion she was very wrong, because she's still fighting to reclaim the spot she lost with think later. Remember that when think later was released, Sabrina and Chappell were not in the conversation. Everyone was looking at her as potentially the third gen z MPG. She had so much visibility and momentum. Some other think later scraps like get what I want and and too good also did numbers on tiktok. If she had come with a full dark pop album with all the smashes she scrapped, she would have had a mega smash album, and fully established herself. That sound was exactly what people were expecting from her. Then SCTW could have been her victory lap album with Sports Car as the lead. Imagine the collapse. Instead the mixed reviews to think later kinda halted her momentum. IMO, that's why she struggled with IOIO and 2 hands until Sports Car turned things around.

I don't mind those songs, but they just didn't deliver on the expectations she set by herself. The problem a lot of people had with think later is the singles and the album cover were selling a sound the album didn't deliver on. So discovering that she had more than enough material to deliver on that sound but for some reason chose not to fully commit to it is so frustrating. I feel like she just needs to be clearer with her vision, Fine if she wants to make ballads or mid tempos, but don't say you're doing a good girl gone bad album, and sad girl bit is getting boring, be in a thong on your album cover, then deliver a bunch of sad songs lol. This! Lol she and the annoying OG fans can be her own worst enemy. They begged for messier but didn't stream it. She threw them a bone with Nostalgia and they didn't stream it. Siren Sounds is actually the first time pandering to them paid off. Also as much as people hate Ryan he saved her career by convincing her to release greedy, and JKW which delivered her only grammy nom and VMA wins lol.

Just keep watching not being pushed as a single or added to the deluxe was such a missed opportunity. It was effortlessly out streaming sports car for months. Imagine if she pulled a Dua and added you broke me first, that way, 10:35 and uh oh to her debut, and JKW to SCTW. Mind you, IOIO, Siren Sounds, JKW were all think later scraps. She really had a smash album on her hands and instead released b-sides like messier, plastic palmtrees, want that too, calgary, grave, stay done. I'll never understand. Same way a lot of the SCTW deluxe tracks that were scrapped like Hard, Favourite One, Don't Make Me Admit would have easily outperformed the released songs. Pure self-sabotage.
