I remember the hype for this when the snippet came out and we thought we were getting a HUGE CINEMATIC STADIUM sound song!

 

I honestly don’t mind the song but if the “washing machine sound” was removed it would have done 10 times better chart wise

I personally feel she was ahead of her time. All the hurt from that relationship was still so fresh yet she managed to push on with such an evocative way to start a new era. No one outside of the navy talks about it enough (well judging from my own POV).

Honestly, all the Rated R era was ahead of her time. And she was 19 years old. 

Probably her most flop era but at the end of the time Rated R was very important in her career.

 

She wasn't playing the victim, she came like a powerful woman. The dark side , the sexy side all started after this.

If I'm being completely honest as much as I love and appreciate the song, it would have to be one of my least played Rihanna singles in recent years. Majority of Rated R aged a lot better for me, but its still great.

It doesn't help that she herself has (understandably) all but forgotten it. It's the most mistreated of her lead singles. I'd love to see her perform it again. This is still one of my favourite live performances of hers.
