those were purposefully campy and fun, a sort of tongue in cheek lightness. a perfect example (that was unfortunately cut from the album) was the MANiCURe demo bridge, the "i want expensive things...including diamond rings". chromatic trades that in for a simplistic, extreme straightforwardness that feels underwhelming (i want your stupid love, I'm not having fun tonight, etc.) of course some of the pop songs are tightly written and excellent such as rain on me and 911, and others the campiness is back such as Babylon.
