ARTPOP was already victim of that oversaturation, partially at least, what Gaga did in her first 3 years of career are the equivalent of a full 10 years of music career, I always think that in a way or another that era was supposed to end in that way regardless and a lot of fans still don't get that it's one of the best things that happened in her career actually.

 

It happened at the right time in order to allow her to take a different career's path showcasing her multitalent in a Barbra-Cher-Garland direction when she was still in a position to do that gathering the right attention and spotlight, because if that 'fiasco' would have happened later in her career, it would have been even more difficult for her to prove her value as artist in general and probably too late, remaining trapped in her early popstar persona.
