It must be a sample. I can’t see her singing the song with the original message with the albums being about liberation after lockdown. 

I will be in San Fran and then LA when the album drops so I low key hope she does something like a mini performance whilst I’m there, even though I know it’s highly unlikely…

what I love about it ? And about Bey’s songs in general. Do you know what I mean if I say her songs never seem dated ? I swear Bday could have been released this year and it would have been BANGER on BANGER fresh to our ears. I don’t feel any « nostalgic » feeling when I listen to her old music because they still sound so good/fresh.

There was some messy tea that I think is plausible regarding Dreamgirls and how Bday was birthed. Beyonce was cast as Deena early on, and considering her star power and although contrary to the essence of the story the producers were going to center Beyoncé as the star.  (In the 90’s there were efforts to make a Dream Girls film and Whitney Houston wanted to play Deena cause of the glamour but even she wanted to sing AIATY to have the big moment 😂). Later, they casted Jhud and things changed and it was clear she was going to be the breakout. Beyoncé did Listen in the film to compensate and get her “moment” as promised to her, and she got top Billing as the Lead actress. Any Beyhive who lived through that era had to deal with the annoying comparisons of who did best and who sang best in the film from the general public. When production wrapped and before the film was released Beyoncé proactively wanted to do some control on the narrative that she had a weak voice, and recorded Bday with the most rambunctious vocals possible. Bday being released in the late summer helped mitigate some of the inevitable foolishness when the movie came out at Christmas time. In interviews Beyoncé said being Deena, inspired her to make Bday, and in a very coded way, she didn’t lie.

This is one of my thoughts too, and one worry I have as a part of #ChartHive for the commercial aspects. Let’s be re, Texas Hold ‘Em is more liked by the GP than it is by the fans, and fans are the ones who are going to tune in without any promo or virality. When the songs were initially released, Hive were hyping up 16C as the “one”.

 

I’ll have faith in her though, cuz she is yet to fail us in quality for a studio album (besides IASF )

* Visual Announcement / Trailer: like others have said, even by Bey's standards, the current predicament is so odd that logic leans on there being a something they have up their sleeve. Of course, we could be in unchartered territory with her level of IDGAF, but because I don't believe that to be her sentiment, I'd sooner lean towards there being a "surprise" we're not currently bracing for.

 

* Sphere / Tour / Other Live Thing: much like the visuals, it's something we loosely "know" about or have heard whispers about, but amidst the "where is the album info" frustrations, it's very back of mind for most of us. Her having a whole live "thing" up her sleeve would be amazing.

The only acceptable use of Jolene is if she's singing from Jolene's perspective, with very much a "I don't want your dusty man, and you're too good for him too" vibe.

y’all are so corny with the concept of completely changing the meaning of ‘Jolene’ if Beyoncé does cover it in act ii. The idea is as bad as when straight male artists change the pronouns when covering a song by a woman.

Why don't you wait to listen what she does with it? She might just use the guitar in the instrumental or the Jolene, Jolene, Joleneee melody with different lyrics. Dolly just said she cleared it.

Where is there the rule that she has to take on the whole narrative of the song just because it's a classic?

 

There's no reason it can't just be something similar to what she did with the well-known samples in Summer Renaissance and Alien Superstar. A lil bit of sample flipped into something else.

 

Much as I feel it sometimes restricts her output, Bey's brand is pretty much anchored in "female empowerment"...so I'd actually be surprised if she came through with an outright cover of Jolene as it feels kinda left of what she's about. Yes, we've had the Ring the Alarm's, but they are kind of few and far between in the grand scheme of her catalog and served very specific purposes at the time. 

 

I can't see a 2024 Beyonce publicly singing "...I'm begging you please don't take my man" LMAO. 

 

At the same time, the idea of her taking a part of the song and doing something unique with it is really exciting.

A cover of Jolene (especially if not a single) would likely be seen by the GP as a homage to Dolly rather than reflect on her brand. Plenty of artists have covered songs different to their brand and the GP sees them as just covers. It would be different if Jolene was on Lemonade.

I wish she sampled 9 to 5 instead of Jolene from Dolly. It fits her more, she already mentioned it on Haunted and lowkey BMS is about that (quit my job etc) I'm sure either way whatever song it's sampled in will eat though cause she can do no wrong

She can easily go from that to this, just like she went from ballroom to country. It ain't that deep  the only way to stay on top in this business long term is to keep changing and keep surprising people. excited to see what she does with it, personally I doubt it'll be a straight up cover but I could be wrong

could she be re-imagining Jolene in a way she did with Vogue? instead of a pretty white woman, she could be singing about a dark-skinned woman like she does with COZY and BROWN SKIN GIRL, in an empowering way. she replaced the names of all the white people from Vogue with African-American female musicians in Queens Remix. she could replace Jolene in a same way, but not make it about a woman that could take her man, but could take any man. that way, she could just change/twist the lyrics, but the song would mostly stay the same
