The 2018 Grammys were not great for women. Lorde, the only female nominee for Album of the Year, declined to perform after she was not offered her own slot during the show. Just one woman, Alessia Cara, was presented with a solo award on the telecast. And the president of the Recording Academy, Neil Portnow, responded to the mounting controversy by telling female artists that they needed “to step up, because I think they would be welcome.”

It was a stunningly tone-deaf comment, particularly following a year that had brought sensational work from SZA, Miranda Lambert, Kesha and others. Amid the burgeoning #MeToo movement, it generated enormous outrage, forcing Portnow to walk back his remarks and fend off calls for his resignation. (Months later, he would announce that he was stepping down anyway, after an unrelated scandal involving the misuse of charity funds.) But it set up a beautiful revenge narrative that would culminate a year later with the release of the 2018 Pazz & Jop critics’ poll, where all five of the most acclaimed albums were, for the first time, by women.

The vindication began two months after Portnow’s gaffe, with the March 30 release of boundary-pushing country princess Kacey Musgraves’ Golden Hour, the eventual 2019 Grammy winner for Album of the Year. A week later, on April 6, Cardi B dropped her chart-topping debut Invasion of Privacy, full of in-your-face attitude and smash singles, while Janelle Monáe’s eclectic pop breakthrough Dirty Computer followed on April 27. Both would earn Album of the Year nominations of their own. Be the Cowboy, issued on August 17, saw indie rocker Mitski steer into more conceptual and stylistic territory to her greatest acclaim yet. And October 26 brought the long-awaited return of dance goddess Robyn with Honey, her first album in eight years, a deceptively personal collection of club-ready jams.

Now things turn over to you, the good voters of ATRL. Which album was your favorite? You can help decide the winner by ranking each of these 61 songs on a scale of 1-10 and then sending me your ballot by Sunday, June 23. Please listen to everything again at least once before submitting. I want honest assessments, not scores based on your memory or biases. Feel free to include commentary if you are so moved. And no trolling or your vote will be tossed. Happy listening!

I guess in part 7, with the albums that finished #31-35 in P&J.

Actually, I think there's a This Was Pop 2018 rate planned. Ariana is in that, right, @Ace Reject?
