If you don't want ads maybe donate to the site and they can make it ad-free.

Though I do agree they can be aggressive, especially on mobile.

You mean pay (?!) while they keep ads to justify more money

No I mean pay so they don't have to depend on ads to pay the bills. It ain't free to run a website.

There was a time they had a premium subscription that was ad-free.

I feel for Ryan who does what he can with the limitations he has since he isn't the owner and I get the need for monetizing. But the most common practice and standard when adding ads to your site is to ensure it is non-intrusive. This site doesn't function properly at all if you aren't blocking ads - especially on mobile. You get the navigation bar being blocked by banner ads, random ads will just suddenly appear as full screen, sometimes if the ads don't load (due to a load error, not because of them being blocked), it stops the rest of the page from loading in and functioning at all. These are extremely and absurdly aggressive.

Complain complain complain about what is a free forum that's only still around because a few good people have put in the work to sustain it while the owner is practically awol. We went through a period up until last year where the forum was crashing every time something major was happening. The upgrade we got is worth a few assorted bugs and shitty ads that can be blocked in a minute if you weren't lazy.

Telling site members to use an adblocker as a solution to a basic UI glitch is just... suburban

Lazy? Imagine saying this about any other critical platform for queer people to interact. You never would have thrown a brick at Stonewall you lazy ******. You would have given the brick to the police and built a gas chamber with it. Don't call us lazy ever again for a REASONABLE complaint about ads making the site totally unusable.

What about ATRLers who can't pay? When did you join ATRL? The site lives and breathes the freedom of the LGBTQ+ community that doesn't always have the funds to pay, including younger users who keep the site alive. NO PAYWALL for ATRL.

So should the owners just fork out the money for a working server themselves?

The site is free to use and enjoy - it just comes with ads so that it can continue to be free. As others have mentioned you can use an adblocker.

I don't disagree that they can be invasive and aggressive, especially on mobile and I believe that is being looked into.

I use Brave on my phone and I always have to end up turning off the shields because when they're on, I can't click on notifications and a bunch of other buttons.

I actually don't use brave for atrl, I just have that adguard DNS thing that @AuntieKunt posted on the first page and it works great. That also blocks ads in other apps, not just your web browser

Weirdo. It's the unimaginative trolls like you that are the problem here. Go join DMF in the dustbin sleep

Get a damn Adblock. I haven't had an ad in years on ATRL. It's not hard and it's not rocket science.

This was the kick in the ass I needed to just get an ad blocker. Tbh, i wanted atrl to get the revenue, but the navigation bar menu being blocked by an ad is miserable

Didn't even know there were ads bc of adblocker lol. I can't understand not using one at this point, much of the internet can be frustrating to use without it

i'm failing to understand your point, it's not hard to add ad blockers on iphone

Using brave changed my life, especially on mobile. I cannot imagine using ATRL with all these intrusive ads
