It didn't "flop" globally, but it definitely stumbled in the US for several specific reasons:

1. The KPop Demon Hunters chokehold

The song's biggest enemy wasn't lack of interest—it was HUNTR/X's "Golden" from Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters. That track spent eight weeks at #1 on the Hot 100 in mid-2025 and has completely dominated the Top Movie Songs chart for seven consecutive months. When Zootopia 2 dropped in November, "Zoo" debuted at #3 on the movie songs chart behind two KPop Demon Hunters tracks and has been stuck in that shadow ever since. There was literally no oxygen left for another animated movie song to breathe.

2. The holiday release graveyard

Disney dropped "Zoo" on October 10, 2025, but it didn't debut on the Hot 100 until January 2026 at #77. That's a three-month gap where the song got completely buried under Christmas music and Mariah recurrency. By the time it finally entered the chart, the momentum from the movie's November theatrical release had cooled significantly. Bad timing killed its launch window.

3. Radio completely ignored it

Here's the brutal stat: despite being attached to a billion-dollar Disney movie, "Zoo" received virtually zero radio airplay in the US. Its Hot 100 peak of #73 (reached in March) was driven entirely by 5.3 million streams and about 1,000 downloads—no significant terrestrial radio push at all. For comparison, that's technically her highest-charting solo entry since "Try Everything" hit #63 in 2016, but it's nowhere near the Top 10 territory her 2023 hits "TQG" and "Bzrp Music Sessions" reached.

4. Soundtrack vs. Single strategy

"Zoo" was the only new vocal track on the Zootopia 2 soundtrack—the rest is just Michael Giacchino's score. Unlike the first movie where "Try Everything" was positioned as an anthem, "Zoo" was treated more as a soundtrack curio than a standalone pop single. Disney clearly prioritized the film's box office over pushing the song as a radio priority. It debuted at #6 on Kid Albums and Digital Song Sales, but they never transitioned it to mainstream pop formats.

5. The "Try Everything" comparison trap

Everyone expected "Zoo" to replicate the first movie's success, but the songs have totally different DNA. "Try Everything" was a universally relatable, anthemic pop song released in 2016 when soundtrack songs still had clearer paths to radio. "Zoo" is a rhythmic, bilingual party track ("a zoo, ooh-ooh") with champeta and tropical influences. It's catchy (Remezcla called it an "earworm"), but it's not the type of song that fits easily between Taylor Swift and Sabrina Carpenter on Hot AC radio in 2026.

6. The US vs. Global split

If you're only looking at US charts, you're missing the bigger picture. "Zoo" actually performed significantly better internationally—it hit #1 on France Airplay, #2 in Belgium, #4 in Netherlands and Ecuador, and top 5 in Taiwan and Malaysia. Globally, it's sitting at over 161 million Spotify streams as of late March. The song isn't a flop; American pop radio just didn't bite while Latin America and Europe embraced it properly.

Bottom line: Peaking at #73 five months after release is solid for a movie tie-in in the streaming era, but definitely disappointing given that Zootopia 2 made over $1 billion worldwide and Shakira just had two Top 10 hits in 2023. It got cannibalized by KPop Demon Hunters, buried by the holiday season, and never received the radio campaign it needed to cross over from "soundtrack cut" to "pop smash."

The song deserved better rollout timing and actual radio support—without those, even a Shakira x Disney collab couldn't crack the Top 40.
