Is 'artistic creative control' real?

Featured Replies

Do you believe artists when they say they have creative control of everything they do - music, lyrics, videos, tours, image?

Or do you think it is just carefully curated story by record labels, PR and marketing agencies? Even when it comes to the biggest names in music.

Discuss.

I think it boils down to money. The richest, most successful artists can afford to have creative freedom unless they are stuck in some abusive contract.

Artists totally have 100% freedom in their artistic creative controls but companies decide whether that art is profitable or not to progress that art.

I think kpop is the only field where you can be massive with zero control

this, kpop groups seem to me is the real hard core definition of the word "industry" as in toys manufactored. Every concept, lyrics, choreography, images, even actions are completely controlled by the company.

Blackpink and BTS are the only two groups that managed to escape the control.

i feel like there's always someone to answer to, even if it's just the fans, but people like janet jackson probably had a large amount of control, beyoncé is not knocking out country/rnb crossover albums because record executives are desperate to crack that market etc

i mean BTS managed to have members solo, which indicates some sort of creative control (despite the mediorce quality)

I think artists have the same control as they always.

I think Britney and Christina have the same freedom and input as Ariana and all the newer girls (unless they're independent)

Taylor and Madonna probably have moreI

Yes bts has had writing credits since debut, blackpink have far less of that compared to most idol groups that have been active in the industry for 5+ years though.
