Singles that killed & ended an era?

Featured Replies

Ciara - And I

After scoring a #1 and two #2 hits "1, 2 Step" and "Oh" and going top 3 with her features in Missy's "Lose Control" and Bow Wow's "Like You" - she releases "And I" which peaks at #96 on the Hot 100 and ends the era

Fergie - Finally

After scoring 3 #1s from "The Dutchess" (London Bridge, Glamorous, Big Girls Don't Cry), and two other top 5 hits (Fergalicious #2, and Clumsy #5) - she releases "Finally" as the 6th single. It fails to chart on the Hot 100 (peaking at #1 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart) and Fergie ends the era.

I think the best example of this is ''Adore You'' by Miley which essentially killed all the momentum she built up prior to that

i love that song :chick3:

woman's world - 143

Even though I love this song, it killed the DW era sadly. She should have released Sometimes or Touch It as the 4th single.

More examples:

Imagine if Harleys in Hawaii was released as the 2nd single instead of this? :deadbanana2: The song has a sad but relatable message but is so weak for a single.

I don't have to explain why this ended the ARTPOP era but G.U.Y. or even Venus would have been a better 2nd single. Wasted opportunity. Artpop deserved better

Birthday kills Katy's Prism (and low-key Katy's career)

It wasn't the song, it was the horrendous 10 minute, not funny music video where she scares kids and then is like hehehe jk im Katy Perry!!1!11!  It was flying up radio and the charts until she dropped it.

The lyric video has like, 4 times the amount of views. Imagine if she just did a normal length typical HD colorful video of her scantily clad in a kitchen wearing a sl*tty apron, baking a cake, and rubbing whipped cream on her boobs and seductively licking it off, with a food fight towards the end where she does all the adlibs. It would have over 1 billion views by now, easy, and Birthday would've been a multi week Top 10 on the Hot 100.

Like, the way it could've gone SOOO differently if it were executed properly is wild. :deadbanana2:

true.

All The Love should've been the lead off 143, it would have done significantly better.

She had dropped 2 massive hits in a row and even though Acrostico wasn't as huge it did great for a solo ballad in spanish by peaking in the top 10 of Spotify, then instead of dropping an album that would do great no matter what she dropped this and pretty much killed off the entire hype for the era

All The Love could have went Top 40 as the lead easy with TTH and real promo. It's easily the best song off 143. It also sounds like a song that would have fit on Prism too.

True; it could've been so much bigger but by that point Katy was in full camp mode for which she is globally known for now.

Despite the could'ves, Birthday was still huge for a fourth single. Especially when you consider how big singles 1 and 3 were.

It's the best song off 143 by miles and is the emotional core to the album similar to Miss You More from Witness. This is particular to Katy's album creating process, there is always something artistically mature and vocally impressive going on around track 7.
Still one of the highest album tracks off the album on Spotify hopefully it can cross 15M relatively soon. :duca: They should release a music video for it

None of these ended the era...

"Alejandro" killed The Fame Monster era. "Monster" and "Dance In The Dark" still needed to be singles

What? Alejandro peaked at #5 and stayed in the top 10 for weeks on end and was mega-played on the radio. It didn't have staying power long-term like a lot of her other singles, but that song was a success during its run. The only reason Interscope didn't release more singles off of TFM was because she was already gearing up for the release of "Born This Way" by that point.

Now, "Marry the Night" — great song, but unfortunately it killed the BTW era. :-/ (Until a decade later when the Wednesday show blew up Bloody Mary and Judas suddenly became one of her biggest songs of all time despite being seen as an underperformance during its initial run to the point they rush-released The Edge of Glory lmao)

Wouldn't help much because her next video sucked as well. :deadbanana2:

I think Alejandro aged the best out of all the fame monster era singles though mister and dance in the dark are also good.

Marry the Night being a single instead of Scheiße is still one of the biggest fumbles tbh.

Chasing the Sun - This Heart

It completely dampened AAY's chances and forced her to fly to Sweden to record one-third of an album.

In the end we got BIBO, which is :heart2:, but CTS certainly killed the era before it truly started.

Videology, for Paula Abdul. Killed her second era and her career
