Was "Angels Like You" a major missed opportunity for Miley?

 

This song, despite never being released in the U.S. as a single, has over 1 billion streams on Spotify, went mega viral on TikTok in the U.S. and worldwide (years after its release) and has over 200 million views on YT. (With a bland music video no less) It's also certified platinum in the U.S. despite never being a single here.

Even 90% of my friends who aren't chronically online know and love this song.  I've heard it so much playing out in public throughout the years too.

 

All of this is insane for a non-single and I don't get why she never released this as a proper single. The song itself sounds like a #1 smash hit. It screams smash way more than Midnight Sky and Prisoner.
 

Should she have released this as an actual single from Plastic Hearts? Did she fumble hard with this song? Was this a missed #1? Discuss!

Yup! The fact it went top 20 globally on Spotify in 2024 is insane and has over a billion streams to become the most streamed single of "Plastic Hearts"

 

Prisoner should've been shelved for this 

Yes it could've been bigger than Flowers

I mean it got put on TTH for a month at the time of PH release. Ballads have different trajectories, it blew up when it was time 

"Angels Like You" is my favorite Miley song periodt and PH is one of Miley's finest albums. 
 

My personal favorite is still "Breakout"

One of her best songs ever. I played it so much in 2020 that it doesn't move me that much anymore but I can't deny how incredible it is.

Yes, everyone loved this song so much. With a better music video and promo it def would go #1

Same, I'm kinda over it now because I've overplayed it. Now I play nonstop Jaded and GOLDEN BURNING SUN - these two songs DESERVE to get billion of streams too

Miley has incredible ballads in general. Jaded, Golden Burning Sun, Angels like you, Never be me, Stay, You, Thousand Miles... My fav Miley's songs.

Yes, as soon as I heard it I knew this was a billion streams song. Absurd that they didn't promote it properly. This should've been a worldwide smash. 

The whole plastic hearts era was missed opportunities  from the cds not being stocked on release date to songs not being pushed

 

it was panny time so I don't blame her but a shame for a great album

It's huge in my country. It penetrated the masses which is very rare these days.

One of her best songs. Her lyrics are really relatable. She should have released it as a single, along with a better video.

I love nothing breaks like a heart which is interesting because it was technically for mark ronson's album late night feelings. She did do a lil promo for it including this which is one of my favorites of miley's tv performances she just sounds so good here

Yes. She has not exactly been a streaming juggernaut, but the fact this song, an album track turned single, has over 1 billion streams is proof if it got competent label support it would've easily been a multi week Top 10 for her.

 

It's more streamed than most of her entire discography that is technically more "iconic". Suuuuuuch a missed opportunity but the fact it continues to do so well shows her listeners have taste (even though she doesn't lmao)
