Wealth inequality risks triggering 'societal collapse' within next decade

Featured Replies

"Growing wealth inequality in the UK could be a "major driver of societal collapse" within the next decade, according to a new report.

The warning comes from an expert roundtable of senior figures from politics, government, academia, business and civil society, which concluded the country is currently on a trajectory of decline, with wealth inequality undermining social cohesion and a risk of further deterioration without intervention.

The report, by the Fairness Foundation and the Policy Institute and Department of War Studies at King's College London, also looked at public attitudes, finding two-thirds (63%) of Britons now think the very rich have too much influence on politics in the UK – far higher than the share who say the same about businesses (40%), religious organisation (40%) or international organisations like the EU and UN (38%)."

This is happening everywhere and the worst part here is governments are selling the idea that to solve this we should increase taxes for the working class and not for the uber rich. It's getting tired now, and the political and economic leaders are playing non-stop with us.

people are still not realising that we are in the midst of a class war, with the rich winning, and not a culture war. that's why people keep voting for people like Trump or the AfD; they still think the dream of a comfortable life is reachable for them.

I'd love to see it but British people love to complain but don't ever take much action (sincerely a British person guilty of both of these things).

I will never understand why some people are allowed to have hundreds of billions in wealth while others have nothing.

That is just a crazy system

Giving us a decade is quite generous. And I would say it will happen in most western countries not just the UK.

The middle class is rapidly sinking into poverty, the poor are increasingly facing homelessness, and billionaires continue to amass even more wealth.

This is why democracy is losing favour among the rich. They seek authoritarian control, using police states and intolerance to crack down on the peasants while they develop AI to replace us.

And this doesn't even take climate change into account :skull:

My straight friends get upset with me when I ask them not to have children, but I know I'm right. Societal collapse is imminent, but at least our generation has enjoyed some progress. This progress is disappearing in front of our eyes and future generations will suffer like people did at the beginning of the 20th century

People have a hyper-awareness they never used to have of the dangers of capitalism and are growing tired of being on the lower branches of the societal tree.

Once a trigger point is reached, there will be rioting across the U.K., and if those future riots don't subside, the government will call in the military to impose nighttime curfews to prevent looting (which itself disrupts the capitalist model).

The nation has already been stirred by rumors of a government cover-up and the media blackout regarding the reporting of predatory sex gangs targeting children. If stories like that persist, rioting is inevitable.

Multinational companies have made the government their b***h - a government who will bend to the will of those companies in context of minimal taxes and incentives to setup organizational bases - tangentially (and on the premise of) such organizations supposedly encouraging wider economic growth - economic growth that never actually ever sustains.

However, most people can now see that system is BS and has not worked in decades. Increasingly, people just don't believe in or care for capitalism at all.

The spell of western populations blindly worshiping at the alter of the capitalist system is slowly yet irreversibly breaking down and it's only a matter of time before that quickens pace, builds momentum, reaches critical mass and ushers in the dawn of a new age.

Will western nations become slaves to the likes of Elon Musk and much less publicized CEO's who suck society dry of money and resources to the benefit of no-one but themselves?

We can see in America that Millennials and Gen Z are not fearful of socialism like their parents and all preceding generations. What does that indicate about a future America?

A secretary at my local doctors surgery is from New York City and she states it is a revelation for her to witness first hand how good a socialized healthcare system can be versus the scared to even call an ambulance system of private healthcare that she was raised with in the U.S.

She doesn't want to return to that. She feels evolved beyond that system and states she could never go back.

If western populations Rebel, what are governments going to do? Switch to becoming police states in a desperate last ditch effort to maintain law and order and prevent the breakdown of late stage capitalism?

Short of a nuclear holocaust, if the people rise up en masse, will the weapons likely to be used by Western governments be powerful enough to defeat their national populations?

I didn't believe it 10 years ago. But now I believe it. I think the spark is going to be the collapse US dollar and then its all down the toilet from that point onwards.

Sadly there's still not enough class consciousness (yet, at least). You can even see it played out daily here on ATRL. People, whether in bad faith or not, still continue to put their faith into this system that has shown time and time again it doesn't give a **** about them.

The system (capitalism) cannot be fixed. It cannot be bent in a way that it will work for the average person - that is simply incongruent to its very nature. And that also goes for the State (as in the nation-states we've learned to take for granted since we're born). The state and the corporations have worked together since day 1 and they're not stopping anytime soon.

There is no such thing as a ''working class state'' and there never will be. The State will NEVER do what we want (or what they say they will do for us). No political party that ever gains a modicum of power will be able to change that.

Wealth inequality is a feature of capitalism, not a bug. There was basically no other outcome for what we're seeing now than this one. Nothing ''went wrong'' or whatever. I know most people in here can see the truth in what I'm saying because many have actually struggled under this reality.

We don't have to agree on everything but we can keep questioning our institutions and authority figures and the power they will over us. In my opinion, no authority is legit and we must always push back against it.

Yeah but I think it'll be felt in five years or so rather than a whole decade in my opinion

People thinking society will collapse when there have been rich and poor for thousands of years. :deadbanana2: Every generation is so arrogant as to think that they will be the last in existence. News flash we will all die one day and society will move on.

The culture war is dwindling. Those same old ass far right talking points are not working anymore in a society that can't even afford rent or food. It was just a matter of time before the most clueless realize the problem was the rich men all along and not your local drag queen show.
