Literally their worst comeback and at the time I quite literally pretended it didn't happen. If aespa wants to do regular pop without the hyperpop or fantasy elements, at least pull more interesting references that haven't been beat to death recently in kpop like they did with Spicy and Better Things. Drama offered nothing that the 4000 other girl crush comebacks that year didn't, sorry.  :emofish:

Not to mention that that song was paired with some of the worst b-sides I have ever seen from a top kpop group, Winter basically apologized on Bubble for some of those songs when they debuted with the hyperline tour, so it was shocking when SM released them anyway and not the excellent solos. There was a reason My World was downgraded from an album to a mini in the first place, and their (at that time) new A&R should have respected the decisions of their much more successful predecessors. Drama was a sloppy cash grab that gave them a quick domestic hit but undid a lot of good will aespa earned from casual fans who saw them as less generic than normal kpop groups.

if you wouldve told me back in the day when i got into aespa that winter would become my bias i would not believe you lol shes a kii and keeps it a buck. i was in webster hall for a kpop party themed night and when a bunch of asian gays got on that stage and lip sang to drama when i tell you it was a cultural reset and felt like gay rights that's just what it was.

yeah where the hell are their original solos and why arent they getting officially released tf drama and sloppy dont belong in the same sentence and did not undo any good will if anything it reminded people not to count them out

Shitzy's downfall is honestly sad to watch since the girls are incredible dancers.. but the music just hasn't been hitting lately

they used to feel so fresh and exciting

o.o how are you feeling bad for their downfall yet referring to them as "shitzy" ... they are once again fresh and exciting but the problem is that it's gonna be a uphill battle because of their consistent mid output after their debut. sneakers was absolutely the pits. and for a minute their title tracks were serving kidzbop. which sucks cause alot of their album tracks wash their title tracks yet are never chosen as the main single to push, why is that?

It's not easy to predict which song could be a hit or not though, and sometimes it really relies on the power of the artist at the time and how the song is promoted. Like "Levitating" flopped to the pits upon release and only became a mega smash because Dua's team kept fighting for it.

Whiplash didn't sound like hit material at all to me; and its longevity so far is astonishing. But I think it's more about how massive aespa is at the moment. If they released Whiplash instead of Girls for example, it would still have flopped

levitating was not a flop by any means and was rather instant. dua was just in her teenage dream era and the songs were beginning to cannibalize each other. i agree what you said about whiplashs longevitiy. but i disagree with the latter statement, if they released whiplash instead of girls phew alot of people would be in the dungeon scared

Let's just hope that when their mini comes out later this year that it's a recently purchased demo that's timely and is a big hit for them. Dirty Work is going to smash and sounds amazing but we know for a fact it's been being sat on since 2021. :chick3:

yeah because sm and their damn delays and not sticking to a schedule which is weird cause how are you overworking these girls yet the music output isn't as quick? or is my judgement of time off lol

It's kinda obvious now that either TWICE or SKZ has to be on tour at all times to keep the lights on at JYP :weeps: The moment TWICE's Ready to Be tour wrapped up, SKZ kicked off DominATE barely a month later. And now, TWICE will start their "This is For"  world tour just 10 days before SKZ's tour ends. JYP is running a stadium tour relay atp

and itzy is gonna go on tour soon i can imagine

I care about music more than music videos. Spicy was a concept change but not a sound change. aespa used to be known as kpop's hyperpop group and now they're just known as a top kpop group. I'm not making anything up. I said my opinion and used facts to elaborate on how I formed that opinion. You can't handle that you don't agree with it, which is not my problem. If you don't have anything to add to the conversation, stop yapping. All the posts are still up to be read if you want to retread this so bad, which would be a better use of your time then continuing to repeat the point that I'm not allowed to dislike Drama because in your opinion, Spicy was the start of aespa's concept change and expecting a different response.

Mind you, the two title tracks from Armageddon already proved once and for all that if aespa releases one aespa-core sci fi tinged anthem and another more palatable girl crush track, and both are excellent songs, that the public almost universally prefers the former. I'm not alone in my preference.

ugh supernova and armageddon the hit and good songs that you are. seeing these both live was a moment

Spicy was a switch in concept but it was the loudest and most abrasive song that group has released(and one of the greatest kpop tracks ever :chick1:). The jump from Charli XCX cyberpunk music to mid 00s Britney club bangers wasn't a massive one sonically. The jump from that to stale girl crush with mamama boom boom lyrics was bigger.

I was literally explaining why I don't like it? Did you even read the posts?

cyberpunk and charli dont belong in the same sentence. charli makes electronic party music but thats about it. aespa is more straight up cyberpunk. girls and or savage are hands down their most loudest and abrasive songs. the latter being an objectively great song though. stale girl crush? girl crush is what got me into kpop i cant stand the hyper femme cutesy stuff especially over the years with underage members debuting. if aespa could reheat britney femme fatale nachos since it fits with their electropop soundscape that would be perfect. aespa could easily serve us a till the world ends and i wanna go easily

'Drama' was the start of good streaming debuts + chart longevity for them.

You can dislike the song, but it didn't undo any good will aespa had at that point. If anything 'Girls' did that, not 'Drama'.

exactly why i said it was an upward turn for the girls. drama is what got alot of casuals to give them a shot and peaked their interest and with good reason and the video is fantastic

34 minutes ago, Ubermensch said:

Girls was a miss commercially but Illusion was as good of a follow up to Savage as we could have hoped for. Hyperpop has never been some massive commercial genre.

kpop streaming numbers are all smoke and mirrors with very few exceptions like APT and Seven, aespa's numbers improving had more to do with SM being bought by their rivals who are notorious for payola. Not to do too much on the thread punching bag, SKZ, but one of the top streamed kpop groups of all time literally does not have a single hit anywhere on earth. The whole industry has been cooking numbers since the youtube days when big 3 groups were challenging for all time youtube records with debut singles. SM as the market leader never invested much in this type of payola outside of Korea because they don't need to fake a reputation for being leaders in kpop. aespa was already doing nearly 2m per release and selling out arenas in the west + a mix of arenas and stadiums in Asia before Drama.

but drama still played a part in making them the force that they are though even if you don't personally like the song but regardless their spicy, bettter things and drama run was immaculate. to then follow that up with supernova, armageddon, live my life, hot mess, whiplash was everything. justice for bahama and kill it which deserved to be singles and have videos. bahama was the summer hit that got away and a better things 2.0 and one of my favorite songs by them. i was so tight when they didn't perform and the concert date of theirs that i went to

28 minutes ago, Ubermensch said:

Before Drama aespa was pushing the envelope heavily with their sound, then they switched up and just became SMs flagship group that releases radio friendly pop. That's the damage I'm talking about, their image shifted. Imo it was a change for the worse and there is a difference in the way people discuss aespa outside of their fan base as well.

Drama was a downgrade in sales, not as big of a hit as NL, Supernova, or Whiplash, and their streams improved but the entire company's streams improved so I'm guessing it's the fault of a well publicized corporate buyout by the company which made foreigners aware of the word sajaegi.

becoming a radio staple after underperforming isnt exactly the tragedy that youre trying to make it sound like noah fence lol again we can agree and disagree but drama to most is a good song. even if drama didnt happen we still got supernova and whiplash which still had them serving the same girlcrush but with a polished 3008 ***** aesthetic which we all eat up obviously lol drama is also one of their top streamed songs

if this aint most of kpop videos like whats with this complaint lol i live in the us and this is one of the main reasons why i love kpop. the scale the budget the production

It only works if the lighting design is good and there's good editing/cinematography

However in Kpop it's generally ultra flat and obvious which defeats the purpose

HYBE military enlisting strategy for BTS really impressed me. Like they all finished already :rip: And I swear that fraud Jimin never leave the charts.

I think this is the root of the difference in opinion. I saw the general kpop audience becoming so invested in aespa as a bad thing, Mys are now a notoriously toxic fandom and aespa lost their edge in a way. We can definitely agree to disagree but I feel like hating fomo kpop bandwagon fans is very on brand and consistent for me. I'm not trying to be a contrarian or making things up on the spot like that other user alleged. This is just how I feel about a comeback from 2 years ago, it isn't that deep imo. :fan:

19 minutes ago, SchmoodRing said:

I think Supernova was definitely aespa returning to form and being kooky again. It does take nerve to make an intergalactic sex anthem about super beings from another dimension. :gaygacat5:

I think Dirty Work so far is an example of how to do a powerful concept without coming off as a tired YG-lite attempt. It's more grounded in actual hip hop aesthetics and dancing instead of what an ai would spit out if you tell it to make a kpop girl power anthem. Love it or hate it, Drama was very much a product of kpop trends, which isn't something you can say about their TTs before it. I love lots of generic kpop, it just isn't what I love for aespa.

Taylor Swift could release the greatest hyperpop banger of all time and her stans would still be scratching their heads. I don't think my dislike for Drama is unfair and it's not like I post about it anymore now that the era is over, other users tagged me as hating it. It actually grew on me a bit over the years even if I still think it's by far the biggest misstep the group has made. :chick1:

actually about to be over Izna because this is Sign 2.0 and idk about them doing another comeback after this without Jiyoon :gaycat7:

BP Q3… not surprised in the slightest

:sabrina:

i dont hate to see it. the girls are legitimately talent but what they did wasnt acceptable at all. the least that they can do is make ammends by keeping their output quality so we can choose and decide to support them

i hope walk goes viral and forces kyp to make it a single that or kiss and tell since it follows the brat trend

i am just getting into izna and beep is so cute but in a way it doesnt make me feel cringe as a an adult man listening to it

BP in Q3 makes zero sense when we know they got a bunch of demos in the vault that just need to be recorded and that's it. this album of theirs better at least have 10 songs. the drought is ridiculous
