Everybody knows that ningning can kinda spit because of whiplash but only the day 1 Mys know that Giselle went to the CL school for bad *******. Dirty Work is going to (hopefully) finally be paying off something Mys were teased half a decade ago with the hip hop concept. :gaycat5:

Spoiler

That was all public knowledge from the member's own comments or just the dates that songs were recorded/registered. :giraffe:

Spoiler

For more actual tea, the wind sunlight water lyrics for drama were completely made up by a fan based off of comments Chris Lee(no longer in a leadership position at SM after an investigation involving this situation) made to smear his uncle LSM during the SM purchase drama.

Literally their worst comeback and at the time I quite literally pretended it didn't happen. If aespa wants to do regular pop without the hyperpop or fantasy elements, at least pull more interesting references that haven't been beat to death recently in kpop like they did with Spicy and Better Things. Drama offered nothing that the 4000 other girl crush comebacks that year didn't, sorry.  :emofish:

Not to mention that that song was paired with some of the worst b-sides I have ever seen from a top kpop group, Winter basically apologized on Bubble for some of those songs when they debuted with the hyperline tour, so it was shocking when SM released them anyway and not the excellent solos. There was a reason My World was downgraded from an album to a mini in the first place, and their (at that time) new A&R should have respected the decisions of their much more successful predecessors. Drama was a sloppy cash grab that gave them a quick domestic hit but undid a lot of good will aespa earned from casual fans who saw them as less generic than normal kpop groups.

'Drama' was the start of good streaming debuts + chart longevity for them.

You can dislike the song, but it didn't undo any good will aespa had at that point. If anything 'Girls' did that, not 'Drama'.

Girls was a miss commercially but Illusion was as good of a follow up to Savage as we could have hoped for. Hyperpop has never been some massive commercial genre.

kpop streaming numbers are all smoke and mirrors with very few exceptions like APT and Seven, aespa's numbers improving had more to do with SM being bought by their rivals who are notorious for payola. Not to do too much on the thread punching bag, SKZ, but one of the top streamed kpop groups of all time literally does not have a single hit anywhere on earth. The whole industry has been cooking numbers since the youtube days when big 3 groups were challenging for all time youtube records with debut singles. SM as the market leader never invested much in this type of payola outside of Korea because they don't need to fake a reputation for being leaders in kpop. aespa was already doing nearly 2m per release and selling out arenas in the west + a mix of arenas and stadiums in Asia before Drama.

with the apple and flo milli collab and an english version coming it really feels like SM is gonna try to give aespa another big push in the west with this comeback

and different from the first time they did, this is actually perfect timing!

If they're doing an apple partnership and an English version in the same day, they're probably trying to build hype outside of Korea. They don't really need any kind of teasing to smash domestically now but this is kind of normal for artists hoping for TikTok popularity in the west.

they need to snatch up more raye demos and serve us more better thinga asap

...

The point is that 'Drama' didn't do any damage for them like you are claiming.

'Girls', besides the album sales, was their true fall from grace moment: no big hit, no streaming numbers and the mini was not received as well as their previous effort, 'Savage'.

Besides, 'Drama'  has better longevity in KR than 'Savage'. It wasn't just a cute hit for them. It actually showed they could keep getting hits with a less public friendly song, which is exactly what Spicy was.

Before Drama aespa was pushing the envelope heavily with their sound, then they switched up and just became SMs flagship group that releases radio friendly pop. That's the damage I'm talking about, their image shifted. Imo it was a change for the worse and there is a difference in the way people discuss aespa outside of their fan base as well.

Drama was a downgrade in sales, not as big of a hit as NL, Supernova, or Whiplash, and their streams improved but the entire company's streams improved so I'm guessing it's the fault of a well publicized corporate buyout by the company which made foreigners aware of the word sajaegi.

While I'm doing coke rants about aespa's a&r: the fact that Armageddon was supposed to be the big push instead of Supernova, as well as the fact that Whiplash was originally going to be in Drama's release slot has me very worried for aespa and all other artists at their pd center(they share a center with Boa and SNSD). Their a&r have no idea what a smash hit looks like and keep seemingly stumbling into them on accident. The constant stories about the members themselves having to push for their best songs to even be released is worrisome because we know at the end of the day with SM that senior idols have more input than senior idols at the average agency, but unlike other idols with some kind of creative input, SM frequently chooses to ignore the talent and go in the opposite direction anyway. Boa's recent comebacks have been fumbled as well and Taeyeon's releases have declined in quality imo. I was all for giving the new structuring of SM a chance but it's a massive chop.

It's not easy to predict which song could be a hit or not though, and sometimes it really relies on the power of the artist at the time and how the song is promoted. Like "Levitating" flopped to the pits upon release and only became a mega smash because Dua's team kept fighting for it.

Whiplash didn't sound like hit material at all to me; and its longevity so far is astonishing. But I think it's more about how massive aespa is at the moment. If they released Whiplash instead of Girls for example, it would still have flopped

Let's just hope that when their mini comes out later this year that it's a recently purchased demo that's timely and is a big hit for them. Dirty Work is going to smash and sounds amazing but we know for a fact it's been being sat on since 2021. :chick3:

Spicy was that switch in concept and sound, not Drama.

And they had to do the switch, or you wanted them to keep singing and centering everything around black mamba? :rip:

You are just looking for stuff to justify why you don't like Drama. You know is okay to just dislike something without there being a bigger reason, right?

Still can't believe Youngseo, Annie and Bailey really killed most of their hype having the naegaboo in their group. Any other random boy could have filled that spot but they had to pick the literal worst option:biblionny:

Spicy was a switch in concept but it was the loudest and most abrasive song that group has released(and one of the greatest kpop tracks ever :chick1:). The jump from Charli XCX cyberpunk music to mid 00s Britney club bangers wasn't a massive one sonically. The jump from that to stale girl crush with mamama boom boom lyrics was bigger.

A lot of that explaining was just you making up stuff and adding other that has nothing to do with the song itself: saying it undo the goodwill the group had at that point (lies) citing low sales for the mini, talking about payola streams...

If you truly had a problem with it because it was the start of aespa's change, you would be hating Spicy for the same given that it was truly the start of their change. :rip:

I care about music more than music videos. Spicy was a concept change but not a sound change. aespa used to be known as kpop's hyperpop group and now they're just known as a top kpop group. I'm not making anything up. I said my opinion and used facts to elaborate on how I formed that opinion. You can't handle that you don't agree with it, which is not my problem. If you don't have anything to add to the conversation, stop yapping. All the posts are still up to be read if you want to retread this so bad, which would be a better use of your time then continuing to repeat the point that I'm not allowed to dislike Drama because in your opinion, Spicy was the start of aespa's concept change and expecting a different response.

Mind you, the two title tracks from Armageddon already proved once and for all that if aespa releases one aespa-core sci fi tinged anthem and another more palatable girl crush track, and both are excellent songs, that the public almost universally prefers the former. I'm not alone in my preference.

It's kinda obvious now that either TWICE or SKZ has to be on tour at all times to keep the lights on at JYP :weeps: The moment TWICE's Ready to Be tour wrapped up, SKZ kicked off DominATE barely a month later. And now, TWICE will start their "This is For"  world tour just 10 days before SKZ's tour ends. JYP is running a stadium tour relay atp

BTS are back? Well... it was nice knowing you ENGODPEN. To the dungeon you go. So much we didn't get to do together.
