HITC review from a 88-rising hating koreaboo perspective:

 

The festival had almost quadruple its regular attendance and it really showed that they weren't prepared. There was a separate merch location for GD which was the size of the merch location for the entire rest of the festival and even then, nobody who didn't line up well before doors opened then immediately run to get in his merch line didn't get anything. Every item was sold out within 2 hours despite a limit of one item per style, per customer. (I got what I wanted though ) Port-a-potties in VIP were completely out of soap and toilet paper by 4:30pm on the first day. There weren't enough water refill stations. Security was tight and professional getting into the venue, but non-existent near the stages. There was a 10 minute stretch where dozens of us tried to get a medic's attention(including me who is 6'3 and the loudest person I have ever met) and it just didn't happen. I get they were stretched thin and I did see several medic carts with gurneys around but there just wasn't enough staff. They did NOTHING to keep the crowd at the different barricades cooled down until day 2 when they started misting the GA barricade. but not VIP. The venue was insanely gorgeous, I've already seen some shows at the rose bowl but this was actually outside of/surrounding the rose bowl, just mainly using the main stadium for its bathrooms and parking lot. The hills surrounding the main stage made it even more picturesque than Coachella. The drinks were about as alcoholic as a capri sun and the food was awful across the board. My oomf had an emergency so I was alone for several hours on the first day and the crowd was generally pretty friendly in VIP but extremely dead and to themselves. Everybody was smoking weed to the point where I could see that being really annoying for somebody who doesn't partake. There also were audio and visual issues constantly. 2NE1's backdrop visuals didn't work, the camera feeds shut off several times, and CLs mic broke TWICE during a 45 minute set. The festival sounded great though, it was loud and crystal clear, you could hear the main stage pretty well even back at the food and merch stands. There were issues but sound quality is #1 and not being afraid of security issues is #2 priority for me at these types of things so it was satisfactory.

 

Performers(mainly focusing on kpop or kpop-adjacent):

 

no na did amazing for their first ever time in front of a crowd, the vocals weren't great but they were live and they were serving a LOT of stage presence for complete rookies. If 88R invests heavy resources into promoting them here, I could see them becoming huge stars.

 

Dean was okay but his choice to split his already short set with a nobody left everybody really confused. It was a mood killer right before GD. Also he was a little too inspired by the king to be going on right before him, it gave walmart dupe vs hermes original and felt like a set up.

 

GD was visibly drunk, didn't make it to stage on time and had to restart his set, gave up part of his set to a DJ(who was great), and didn't dance enough. I've been watching all of the shows on his current tour and also have seen him live before and he just wasn't up to his very high standards. He sounded great and his stage presence/swagger is always off the charts so it was really enjoyable but the VIP crowd went from electric before he came on to really dead. The main crowd looked a bit more lively but still not as much as they were for others. The most hyped the crowd got during his set was for an mp4 of Taeyang on the backdrop.... I had the time of my life because that was my idol singing my favorite songs ever but even the GD stan group chats were calling it objectively the low point of the festival.

 

DPR Ian earned a new stan. Never could get into his music despite his proximity is to my kpop favs IU and CL but I'm kinda obsessed now. Singing, dancing, instrument playing, crowd work, stage presence, body tea, every single thing was correct he's a superstar.

 

2NE1 were the best idol group performers I have ever seen live. Even with the constant AV issues and Park Bom being missing they tore up that stage. It was the best crowd I've ever been in at a live show. Somebody described it as feeling like megachurch worship. They sounded amazing, were dancing their asses off, the setlist was perfect. No notes. I have no idea how they could take off a decade of performing together and within a few months deliver better sets than groups in their prime who tour every year. Forget BTS or BP, they really deserved the career trajectory of DC. CL was born to be on stage. I've seen everybody (Gaga, Taylor, Madonna, Beyonce, Dua, Billie, Katy, Britney, Janet, etc) and I have NEVER seen somebody have so much control over a crowd before. Her energy and actual singing/dancing were top notch too. Minzy and Dara are world class as well but 2NE1 was always more about CL and Bom, and with Bom missing CL had to pull a LOT of weight, which she did effortlessly.

 

Jackson Wang sucked and JYP Entertainment feels more like a social experiment on how low the taste level is with kpop fans by the day. He's not untalented, that music was just awful and he kept bringing out 88rising khias that the crowd didn't like the first time. It killed the energy hard and fast.

 

The non-kpop sets were pretty great for the most part too. I loved Xin Liu, I've seen Rich Brian before and didn't care for him but he was much much better this time, Porter Robinson is cringe asf but people seemed to live for him, 4eve popped the **** off, higher brothers stood out as possibly the worst set I have ever seen at any music festival, etc.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

It was really great to see that despite the fact that kpop talent is the biggest names you can get for a festival celebrating asian music, weird weeby incel kpop fan culture doesn't have to overtake the whole thing and it can really just be about the music and the artists. This was a crowd that went off just as much for DJs dropping Carti as they did NJZ, it really felt like I went back in time to gen 2 back when in the US, kpop was just pop music from Korea without the disturbed fan culture. It was just a normal music festival crowd not behaving like they've never been outside before who also happened to love and appreciate the same music I do, instead of weirdo barking and photo card trading. There was hardly a lightstick in sight because people were there to actually dance and throw their hands up. It was my favorite music event I've ever been to and if there's ever a combination of artists I stan as headliners again I'll be splurging for the tier above VIP. If anybody is ever on the fence about going, just do it.

They also did one for Party before releasing Lion Heart. BlackPink did it with HYLT before The Album. My guess is that Aespa has a mini for September, Japanese mini/full in November and a full Korean album in the second quarter (April-June) of next year. They are saving material but had an extra title track ready to go and instead of making a new mini for it, they had the girls tour and do a ton of festivals and events.

Those have just been registered. When a song is written and recorded, it has to be registered before release to determine royalties. Dirty Work will have 1-2 B-sides and an English version of the title. Aespa have a mini album coming between July and September and a Japanese release coming before the end of the year so the songs could end up on either release.

They do have the material for a mini though. Insiders have heard some of the tracks and said a majority of them are good. HYLT was also part of a full album era so us getting multiple singles was always gonna be a given. The other stuff you mentioned is brand new to me but I appreciate being educated and informed so thank you for that. All in all I cant wait for the new Aespa material. They're my bias and have been for a while now. I just want them to continue to get bigger and better. It's kind of crazy to think about how andnwhy kpop doesn't do more traditional rollouts  with albums and stuff. Just so that we can get more music sooner and have full eras. I really do hope that we get a new mini and album by the end of this year. And yass just as long as we get more than one song I'm good so hearing you confirm that Dirty Work will have 1 or 2 b sides is amazing! 

oh also @Save-Me-Oprah CL said 2NE1 is coming back to the US as 4 sometime so I'm assuming a non-asia world tour is still being cooked up.

It's interesting that Bom's individual agency was the announced her absence from 2NE1's performance, not YG

Neither JYP nor GOT7 was there. These companies shape an artist's approach though. I'd still consider GD and 2NE1 YG idols too. GOT7 is actually back together now without JYP though and had a comeback and concert this year.

Teddy has a whole agency + Black Pink to worry about. CL is still being booked for solo shows all over the world where she doesn't need to split pay with her members.

 

If it's ever going to happen at all, it's going to be low priority for the people who actually make the songs.

It's YG. Yang Hyun-suk didn't mention 2NE1 at all in that video. We always knew the "they were like daughters to me" mediaplay last year was bullshit but he's not even hiding that 2NE1 was just being used for a quick cashgrab with no plans to actually revive the brand.

That only happens because it's YG, the only big agency where producing and releasing ONE song seems like a herculean effort. GFriend managed to release a special song + MV and do an Asian tour even though Source Music is focusing on Le SSerafim and three members focusing on VIVIZ. If YG actually cared, 2NE1 would've released at least a single album or a mini album by now.

This is 100% correct and YHS hated 2NE1 since pre-debut when he was forced by investors to debut another girl group despite thinking that women aren't real hip hop artists, BUT, we've known for a while now that one of the four girls wasn't on board for a group comeback until recently and that the rest only want 2NE1 as 4. All of them have been viciously targeted by the media and GP, especially Bom, and during gen 2 YG's pr strategy was that any press is good press, and to double down on scandals for more prominence in media. Between the abuse they endured and the worries of living up to their global kpop pioneer status, I think it's really understandable how it took so long for them to come back and I'm just happy to see them existing as a group in any capacity at this point. 

 

**** YG for not booking bigger venues and more dates in Asia though. I just saw 50k+ people singing every word of a 15 year old discography in a different language. What were they doing in 10k capacity venues in places that aren't racist against east asian people? If you're going to do the cash grab at least fully commit and give the fans an actual chance to see them + make the maximum profit. From what I saw they're easily an arena tier act in the US, it only makes sense that they could have filled stadiums in the country where they were farming #1s easier than IU for 5 years straight.

If they ever do an album I would like to see at least one Teddy track to use as a single for nostalgia's sake the same way GD did for Home Sweet Home, but other than that, CL is infinitely more talented and tasteful than that FRAUD.

Jackson has always had his own people around him, starting back when he was a "trainee."  It insulated him from JYP, allowing him more solo activities than would have been expected in that post-Suzy era.  Sure he learned things from JYP, but they always had their own ideas, too.
