"kpop don't sound and look kpop anymore" i seriously don't understand this, especially when it's about min heejin who literally influenced kpop trends for two decades. maybe it's the SM sheep in me speaking... but it doesn't make any sense to me especially with how similar newjeans is to SM's aesthetic... at least more similar than with other hybe groups.

 

i'd love to hear everyones' genuine thoughts about this statement because it's interesting imo...

i do agree with you on the maximalism part mostly because this is what i, and probably most of us, love about pop music, but don't you also think this has to do with current trends of the times we live in? western pop went from maximalist and loud music to minimalism as well, and it's slowly evolving again these days because trends are changing, maximalist productions are becoming trendier again etc. and kpop has always been following western trends

 

 

this was kpop before the 2nd gen... i don't think this fits your description tbh. aespa has always been thriving in maximalism because they were the first to introduce hyperpop / hyperpop adjacents sound in kpop, but they were simply ahead of the curve since it was a huge risk (that paid off) taken by SM, while most other companies would simply follow what's trendy in the west, and that has been the case forever.

 

maybe you simply hate newjeans and min heejin lol but if we're putting our personal bias aside, it's obvious that kpop is, like any other music scene, influenced by the current times. so many other brands in korea (and around the world), went from maximalist and fun designs to bland minimalist branding because it's the trend (sadly).

 

so i don't really agree with the "ruining kpop" "not sounding like kpop"... kpop is just another music market that's constantly evolving, you can't expect it to look and sound the same as it did in 2013 (even though it gave us so many bops back then )

 

now, a lot of groups are huge offenders of "ruining kpop" but it's mostly because the music is ****, uninspired, and done 5000 times already. but i don't believe newjeans is one of them. after all they're the most famous and acclaimed 4th gen girl group along with godspa  it was nice having at least two groups with fun concepts and sound that weren't done before in kpop, not we're only left with aespa (and idle to some extent)

No shade to the 1st Gen but it was 2nd Gen who introduces Hallyu Wave to the world with the following Gen who strengthen and expanded it more.  SNSD didn't become the Nation's Girl Group who have massive international following bc they were singing kissing you baby. It was Gee - Genie - Oh - RunDevilRun - The Boys. Wonder Girls with Nobody, 2NE1 with Fire etc. what do they had all in common? it's pure pop in all it's best forms.

 

While I do agree that Kpop is following what's trendy in the west but still the industry were able to retain the campiness and maximalism up until New Jeans like sorry I was raised by SNSD, 2NE1, Lady Gaga, Beyonce etc. this is also the reason why I couldn't get into the indie alt girls in the west. yeah i do agree with you!! i also think k-pop became popular in the west because they responded to the demand for that kind of music when pop became boring. like when gaga and bey were doing joanne and lemonade  i like joanne and lemonade is an amazing album but it was more on the minimalistic side imo

 

i think newjeans' concept was great and they have great music (like their entire discography smashed) and it's fun, and camp at times, but they were heavily limited by the members ages  which is one point i disagree with min heejin. because it's SOOOO limiting. but i feel like they would have evolved with bolder concepts and music as they grew up, but sadly we may never know

most people just don't understand the the creative directors are the ones that have the biggest influence on Kpop albums. They don't understand how much MHJ has impacted the industry. It's crazy to me how people downplay creative directors when they are the reason their faves have bops and great concepts (or not in a lot of cases…)

This was lowkey the most important comeback in their career 

Only 5th gen groups seem to be following the NewJeans-inspired minimalistic concept and sound, while most 3rd and 4th gen groups continue to stick to their usual or more maximalist concepts and sounds.

K-pop stans don't accept when trends change.

I hear "k-pop doesn't sound like k-pop anymore" as far back as 2014. People expect it to look and sound exactly the same as when they started listening. If anything, I thank NewJeans for rescuing us from the yoloswag sound that overstayed its welcome on girl groups.

I like some trends, I don't like others, I hate the pedantic artsy trailers everyone seems to be doing now, but at the end of the day things change and there'll be good music to be found in k-pop landscape you just have to look for what suits your taste.
