I have just recently finished watching KATSEYE's documentary on Netflix (I know late af but...) and here are some unsolicited thoughts:

 

1. Their whole training process is cruel; but imagine how worse it could be for our Korean idols whose training started from like 10 or 12 years old. And you have idols like Seulgi or Jihyo who went through 5 to 7 years of being a trainee. Like just imagine... And I think that's one of the reasons why Kpop groups tend to stick to each other and not disband in a few years with tons of drama like Western girlgroups. It's not just because of the culture or how they're afraid to speak out, but they know they have sacrificed so much to be where they are and they're not willing to throw it all away because of some petty drama. 

 

2. It's quite obvious how HYBE prioritises dance/look over singing skills. The majority of them have had dance training since they were kids, and even the ones at the bottom in dance ranking like Manon are still above-average / decent dancers. Meanwhile, only a fair few of them can actually sing; and we see way more of their dance training sessions than singing lessons  

 

3. The survival show was so rigged. They just conveniently had the final group with members covering all the key demographics of Kpop fans in the world: Korean, SEA, Latino, Indian, African. Their decision to eliminate Adela and Nayoung (two strong contenders) was so dumb. And it's so ironic how the Americans and white girls were kinda at a disadvantage with the voting nnnnnnn

 

4. The drama between Manon vs the girls was so unnecessary. It sure made great TV drama materials, but it's so detrimental to the dynamic of a Kpop group; esp how fans value the friendship between members so much and discord between Kpop group members always becomes great gossip materials for tabloids and antifans.

 

On the flipside, we can see the bond between the girls even though some of them only spent 3 to 6 months training together. So it's not delusional of Kpop fans at all to believe in the friendship between members of their favourite bands. Things like Soshi Bond could be very real since they spent pretty much half of their lives together.
