Is Gaga bad at choosing scripts?

Featured Replies

ASIB was a hit but as an inexperienced actress trying to break through she took whatever opportunity she could. But now that she is a big name movie star, she has had scripts thrown at her. Her first pick was House of Gucci. While Gaga has praise and nominations, the movie itself was mixed. It did decently but critics did not love it. And now we see with Joker it's a commercial and critical flop despite the praise of her few scenes. Does Gaga choose bad scripts?

  • she's just very opportunistic and lacks serious acting skills watch her try to write, produce, direct and star in her own biopic next

  • She is bad at choosing songs too. Her lack of taste is astonishing.

  • At this point, I think you guys just need to have an OGH base. I can't with all these threads

All her project on paper sound like great ideas and right up her alley

This.

ASIB, Gucci and AHS are all good.

Joker is a $12M-paying role. I'd take it even if it was the worst thing ever written.

All her recent (post ASIB) roles seem like a great idea on paper. House of Gucci even Joker 2 looks brilliant on paper. Challenging roles, different from each other showcasing her versatility, the problem is that the movies themselves are lacking and for example with Joker 2 it would have been better if it wasn't a musical but just a straight follow-up to Joker. She's picking good roles and is getting praised, but sometimes the movies just need a better editing which is out of her control.

Gucci sounded like a safe first pick with big names involved.  It's hard to fault her for the boring execution of the film when we know her more exciting scenes got cut.  The sex scene with Salma would have been something to talk about for sure.

When it comes to Joker, the script wasn't finished when it was pitched to her.  Toad wanted to know who he was writing for before finishing it.   If picking an unfinished script = picking a bad script then maybe you are on to something.

Mind you she was already a best actress Golden Globe winner when she got the role

Yes, I think so. However, it is worth noting Joker 2 is not a panned film because it is a Transformers or Super Mario-bad movie, it is panned because of high expectations and bold choices. It is essentially a good movie for its genre, a bad movie for the demo it's targeting.

It's also only her third movie and she continues showing that she's a good actress. So all it takes is one overall good movie and she may be a serious contender for an Oscar as an Actress.

ariana landed one of the most coveted roles of movie history based on her talent alone, she had everything going against her (the snotty broadway crowd, her past as a nickelodeon star and her being a big name that could be too distracting for such an important gig) so i don't see the irony at all

1. As a lifelong fan of Wicked and a theatre/film person, if you sincerely think that Glinda is one of the most coveted roles in movie history... :rip:Not even the most coveted role in that movie

2. I think they diverge at the Oscars despite Mad's 2+ decades of failed attempts

It appears the director got his wish in part from his leading star Joaquin Phoenix, who would throw out the script on a whim and gather with Phillips and co-star Lady Gaga in his trailer to rewrite entire scenes from the ground up.

"We'd very often meet in Joaquin's trailer and sometimes we would just tear the script up and start all over," Gaga recently told Vanity Fair for her own cover story. "It was a really cool, liberating process

Apparently she had a hand in writing some parts of the  script.
