I feel like I never see any love for this song or it being referenced anywhere. It brings me such 2012 vibes in the best way, and is kind of a staple post-break up song. I absolutely love the sassy verses leading into that anthemic chorus declaring the final end of a relationship. Taylor was kind of in her bag with Red, crafting true pop staples and classics with this, 22, I Knew You Were Trouble, Red, etc.

 

Is this Taylor hit underrated?

Yes, it's one of the greatest songs of all time.

But is a really fun song and honestly a classiqué 

WANEGBT is such an underrated CLASSIC! 

 

It is such a fun and tongue in cheek song, and every time I hear it, I'm instantly transported back to 2012. An absolute blast to sing along to. I feel like it gets a lot of criticism because Taylor is held to a standard of having songs that are lyrically deep, and this song isn't really meant to be, and that's okay! Also, WANEGBT walked so that the 1989 singles could run lowkey. 

I'm a Taylor fan but but by no means are any of her songs, particularly her #1 singles, underrated by the GP. This one in particular is honestly kind of overrated

The answer is no. It was very popular at the time but she's put out several better songs and singles since. I'd say yes if it was a great song that gets lost in the shuffle of all her hits but this honestly was never (ever) a great song.

Her lead singles from Red to Reputation were all really huge events. Mine was also really hyped in Aug 2010, but not quite as much as WANEBGT in Aug 2012, because her fanbase back in 2010 was still primarily country and not majority pop yet. Red was the first time she'd ever made a full-on pop song and her path to becoming a popstar was becoming much more obviously recognizable to the GP, drawing in more pop listeners on top of her devoted country fans. She did a livestream listening party to premiere the song and from thereafter, the song was everywhere and was her first song to be immediately pushed hard on pop radio first week, so you could not escape the song. It became obvious quite early in the week that this song was going to debut at #1, and you have to keep in mind that prior to WANEGBT, she'd never had a #1 on the Hot 100 before, so it felt very much like a breakthrough for her and her fans watching.

 

It nearly broke the record for most digital sales in a single week at the time, only behind Flo Rida's Right Round back in 2009, just to put things in perspective. 

 

Reactions to the song were pretty positive. I remember after Week 1 it didn't have super long legs though. It certainly wasn't freefalling and it did last on the charts, but it also wasn't dominating the rest of Fall 2012 or anything like that. It spent its first 3 weeks atop Aug-Sep 2012, so it did feel a little frontloaded, especially when you compared to subsequent Red single IKYWT's longevity and hell even the next lead SIO's longevity 2 years later.

It's not underrated. It's overshadowed.

 

It truly felt like her official pop crossover, and anyone who remembers its release will tell you that it was one of those inescapable songs that got so big people started hating on it.

 

Then came 1989…

 

At the time, it felt like it would be the biggest song she'd ever released, but it got dwarfed by everything that came after, which creates an illusion that it's "underrated."
