Don't get me wrong, my fav movie of all time (Under the skin) is from this production company.

But lately, it seems like people, specially on tiktok and X keep pushing this narrative that

A24 = INSTANT MASTERPIECE

Sometimes even before watching the actual movie. They have EPIC films of course but a lot of their movies are all aesthetics or some dark plot and shocking visuals / moments.

Do they live up to their reputation or are they overrated?

  • yes everything everywhere all at once is their biggest farce yet

A24 just put out the wonderful Hazbin Hotel so they just keep winning for me :giraffe:

Yes like Searchlight pictures. Americans are not good at making these kind of "art movies" (with very few expections).  That's for europeans and asiatics :sorry:

Americans can make very great movies of course but they're great in other things.

Absolutely not. Not saying that every single one of their movies is a masterpiece, but they do have some of the best films of this century. They actually invest in amazing original ideas and scripts and have a lot of interesting work across many genres. They've put out the best horror movies from the past few years and for that alone, I stan!

So while A24 doesn't always mean INSTANT MASTERPIECE, it still guarantees a certain level of quality.

I don't know but they have more hits than misses, and they're not afraid to experiment or take risks, in comparison with other similar production companies.

they are mostly hits for me although there's def a few stinkers in their lineup, especially from their older films

Sometimes I feel like the are and then they come out with a masterpiece, they even seem to space them out right. Also, I wonder why they have such a hold on the gay community

I need one of their caps

Nope.

They are actually trying to do something interesting and original with American cinema and not drawn their public in overpriced fan service crap.

Yes, I fear. I loved A24 when I was a teenager in my avant-garde film nerd phase, but I've grown out of them now and find a large portion of their films irritating. I also just hate everything the company personifies...selling grossly overpriced, "exclusive" merch for insufferable hipsters that look down on anyone that doesn't like the same movies they do. I cannot stand A24 film snobs. Just so annoying.

But I do find the studio overrated. They have some good movies, but I've grown out of many of them, too.

No and I think it's good to celebrate the stuff they put out, maybe that will encourage other studios to work harder

I’ll never know because I’m too afraid to watch movies like that :bloo:

in a certain sense. I DO despise the "leave it to A24 to save cinema" "A24 can do NO WRONG" comments because thats just absolute bullshit but they are incredibly consistent at putting out GOOD movies that 99% of other studios (maybe sans NEON) would never produce.

well, when you put it like that

No. Even if some of their movies don't connect with me I think it's fantastic to see a studio take risks while cinema is currently drowing in super hero movies, sequels and remakes

Nope. Ofc not all of their movies are great but what they've done feels so fresh in an era filled with all those awful remakes, reboots, sequels, prequels, live actions and superheroes.

I don’t know really. I have a problem with watching movies - they are usually long. I can’t focus for more than 5 minutes :rip: So it’s hard to tell

But Poor Things (Searchlight) is directed by a Greek. So?
