Examples when labels did their job right

Featured Replies

We often hear and see examples of labels doing strange things (for example, from the last one,

Hollywood Records did not release the video for "See You Again", considering the song's potential as a failure).

But what examples can you call 100% successful, without a miss?

I'll start.

(I wrote this line, but, frankly, you need to think. In the end, I thought for 40 minutes and came up with.)

Britney Spears - "Womanizer" (2008)

The label, which is, to put it mildly, rather blunt on the promotional campaign, managed to pull it all together.

They even managed to get a Grammy nomination, although that was unlikely.

If I recall correctly, Taylor Swift said that the label made her release Cruel Summer as a single. Judging from the lack of interest from her side in pushing the song to the top of the Hot 100 (compared to the millions of remixes she did with Willow, Anti-Hero, Lavender Haze etc.), I'm inclined to believe that is true.

Mariah thought she had finished Emancipation in late-2004, but L.A. Reid made her go to the studio with Jermaine Dupri for a couple of extra sessions.

Four songs resulted: It's Like That, We Belong Together, Get Your Number and Shake It Off, a.k.a. the first four singles. Don't Forget About Us, the 5th single, would also be produced by JD in a latter session.

E.T., oh it tanked? drop a Kanye remix with a spectacular visual

Last Friday Night, oh she has a chance to tie the MJ's record? drop a quick Missy remix to secure the #1

and then the re-issue, the promotions, everything was perfect

Not really, it was a mini-Dark Horse as the promo single. Everyone has anticipation that it would be a perfect single along with "Peacock".

I'm pretty sure it could have been a number-one solo single, since it has topped some countries.

Seriously?? I never knew this oml

The whole album is gorgeous but this was so necessary for shifting those copies

iggy was with island-def jam (one label)

they nailed the video with sufficient budget

got a radio deal with clear channel/iheart radio

Fancy got picked up on rhythmic first, then Pop and HAC allowing it to go #1 on billboard

and THEN what most people forget is they sent it to Urban later where it topped the chart giving it heaps of longevity and the 7 weeks #1

When they made girls aloud release love machine but the whole time the girls were like wtf??

This is partially marketing but the way Warner made Dua Lipa breakthrough in the US was very impressive. It's practically impossible to make a Euro Pop girl breakthrough in the USA in the 21st century... except if you are Adele. Just like that, Dua was elevated from her former peers level. She was literally in the same lane as Zara Larsson, Anne-Marie, Rita Ora, Jess Glynne etc. Now she competes with the big names.

Rihanna's Loud era, though I think Who's That Chick being kept for David's album was a mistake.

Not only that, but she broke through without having to change her sound to fit American radio. I'd even say that's one of the reasons she broke through while her mid-10s peers floundered. She owned her Europop image and made that her USP instead of pandering to the trap-pop era.

Yeah the quality and effortlessness of Future Nostalgia really gave her that cool girl factor as well. The fact Dua effortlessly set a trend for the sound of early 20s pop in not only the US, but globally despite just breaking through in the country says a lot. The fact Future Nostalgia almost spend 200 weeks on the Billboard 200 as well without ever departing. It's giving instant classic

A masterclass in pop promo and a reminder that if Warner supports a girlie, even Columbia girlies shake in their boots.

It was a pretty ballsy move considering the disastrous leak even. Everyday I pray that Dua, Warner and the team reap the benefits/profits of the extensive promo for years to come (if anyone can share earnings receipts)

the persistence and commitment to Dua Lipa in her first era.

her second era too due to the seamless album roll out and ability to deliver a “complete” era, including a big and successful fourth single, post-album.
