While her previous albums greatly underperformed big time, she still has an impressive 53M monthly listeners on Spotify despite not releasing any new music. In fact, she has more monthly listeners than Beyonce (who recently had two top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100).

Is it safe to say that she's still a MPG despite her recent commercial failures?

No because she hasn't been commercially viable since 2014, almost a decade ago.

But people still consume her music en masse based on Spotify data. Would it be safe to say she has already secured her MPG status because of her massive hits?

If you only care about the US billboard hot 100 peaks then no but it’s a narrow minded way of thinking about quality and status

The title just doesn’t go away simply because you’re not as popular or relevant! 
 

If that’s the case we have only a handful of MPG which is boring. It should be a hard title to get not the other way around.

Same. It also has a mental reference to specific category of artists, in different eras and decades.

No. No longer an MPG. But she is fabulous for a throwback, ie: why her catalogue of 10+ years old is still getting healthy streams in 2023

Bey's recurrent streams are beyond tragic. There are multiple Gaga tracks that outstream entire Bey albums.

I don't feel like this is the case though. For instance, Janet Jackson only has five million monthly listeners, so she's clearly irrelevant now. On the other hand, Katy and Britney have more monthly listeners than current it-girls like Olivia, so they are still relevant.   

I still see her as one. 

Smile (album( was a wasted opportunity. while Never Really Over was a great lead, and songs like Harley's In Hawaii and Tucked and even Daisies were good, 

Small Talk, Never Worn White, and Smile do not sound like songs that anybody in the 2020s would stream let alone watch music videos for or play on the radio nor do they sound like great songs and i would question anybody that says otherwise.

and yes Katy should be making the music Katy wants to make, but with the constant references to older albums while promoting Smile, it feels like Katy and her team were a bit on sure with how to proceed, but...

you just can't compare Clown to the perfection of Teenage Dream.

Clown is like the 40 year old soccer mom version of Teenage Dream.

they can EASILY do so much better.

Monthly listeners have everything to do with playlist exposure and little to do with people actually streaming you. 

 

She hasn't had a hit era in literally 10 years now so no.

No. But I feel like another hit is coming her way a la Meghan Trainor. If people like her can succeed, someone like Katy should be able to do that too.

Idk but I do remember when all of ATRL suddenly became Katy "stans" and threads like this must be painful.

when did monthly listeners become an indicator? it's about playlist reach, it means she has a good catalogue of hits

she's not been relevant for a decade, MPG are relevant pop girls

She needs to tour and prove she still has an audience out of Spotify, it doesn’t matter if she gets streams from her old catalog if she cannot even tour at WW scale.. If she can't do that she's shouldn't be considered a MPG anymore tbh.

Nope and that's okay. She made her undeniable mark on the industry and is rich af 

I feel like MPG should be reserved for the main pop girls of the given moment. And one eventually graduates to icon, then legend status. Or you flop, and fade away.

They actually have to stream her music. You make the same excuse about current hits though. If you remove current hits from playlists, very few people are going to stream her on a daily basis.
