There were articles about L.A. Reid (he’s with Epic) producing her next album, so something must have happened and we’re thankful.

You're half right, half wrong. 

 

Yes, there was something about LA Reid producing her album (a very recent, just Xmas article at that), but he's BEEN left Epic. Like for years.

 

He set up his own label HitCo (which was moderately successful with acts like Saint Jhn and J.Lo for a very brief period) and he recently sold that off and it's been folded into the label that bought it. 

 

Usher recently teased that he and LA are setting up a label + more. So, I'm inclined to believe that Mariah may have left for that. Especially if LA is intimately involved with her album.

Anyone that can make an album like The Emancipation alongside her gets my vote. 

 

His diminished industry stock is like a pro and con. In one regard, who has he actually worked magic on in recent years? BUT on the other, he "gets" Mariah, they have a proven track-record, and he still has clout enough to put her in with the right producers.

 

I just hope that it's not a totally indie venture. I'm not expecting any kind of hit single, but there are still very clever and results-driven ways to work an older diva album. BMG slayed down with Kylie Minogue, really leaning heavy on physical units like vinyl, cassettes, signed versions etc. The Lambs will eat it up for Mimi and it's an easy way to offset the obvious losses of her not being a streaming act (beyond Xmas).

BMG (or an equivalent that's stronger in the US) might be perfect for her. She'd still have the independence she wants (see: Kylie and her Darenote label), but would still be supported by a strong distribution network.

 

They very clearly chase album sales, which suits her since she didn't like the singles-driven approach to Caution's promo. The big question is whether they're strong enough in the US to truly promote her, since they're more of a UK-based label.

Yeah, I mean it's not like she's going to have another Emancipation era. What woman at 53 has done that besides Cher and we're in a much different climate for older females in the industry than 1998.

That might kinda be iconic, if she went back to Columbia.  They seem to be putting more of an emphasis on Black music (for lack of better term) again.  
 

Could be a huge PR moment, her making her return to Columbia.  Hmm.

I would argue though that Mariah’s music still has young appeal.  
 

And with TikTok, more and more older songs + artists are getting hits.  So she might actually have a better chance than past female artists 40+.  I mean…look at Beyonce.

I just don't see it for Mariah.  

 

She has more Gen Z appeal than most, but with new music? Idk. Caution was almost five years ago and her voice has declined since then.

Mariah leave from Epic some years ago. she's probably right now on RCA 

I feel like not that long ago I was reading about her going back to Sony and it felt like a huge thing but I think that was 7/8 years ago dd. A fruitful alliance it was not! Ready for her independent Disco (2020) late-career smash.

Sony literally saved her reputation and gracefully navigated the memoir, MC30, the continued rise to Queen of Xmas, helped her cross over to Gen Z online. I really think we would have seen Stella Era continue and her reputation not recover the way it has without their team.

I don't see successful new music anywhere in that list. These are all good things but where were the studio albums? She released one under their auspices and it was a chart disappointment to say the least. The Stella era saw #Beautiful as a lead single. The Sony 2.0 era saw... With You as a lead dd and the obvious smash The Distance relegated to promo single.

I don't mean blockbuster, just chart peaks that aren't nightmarish and single runs that make sense. just set the groundwork for success and let the music and a permanent change of wardrobe and styling do the rest.

Meh, I don't see it. A cute #1 peak album in a good week like Kylie and Celine recently, sure, but they're all gonna have abysmal sales at that age.

She actually does have Sony doing this for her catalog, it’s Legacy. They are the ones responsible for her compilation releases. If she were to do a distribution deal and go indie, she would probs prefer a larger label backing her though (like republic or something).
