bye not that dumb video sm made saying that their artists will be neglected under hybe.... as if that isn't already happening bffr :bird:

that’s the worst take someone could make out of the situation because wtf do you think is gonna happen if HYBE takes over SM? that suddenly all of SM’s artists are gonna be treated fairly? it’s literally the exact opposite.

chris lee is ruining sm's reputation with all this b****ing about hybe and lsm. keep that s*** to a board room i don't wanna hear it.

anyways! onew 1st full album march 6th! exciting! hopefully it's a great as dice!

this reply is kinda funny to me because if hybe's takeover on SM goes through, artists like onew won't even have an album to release

as of now sm gives releases to nearly all of their acts every year but like stated in the new video, there's a limit to how much albums one company can release yearly, and if sm merges with hybe, this limit will be exceeded and older sm acts and solo will literally be shelved with no hope for a comeback

on top of that, idols like key will lose their main gigs since hybe has a beef with mbc and key's biggest gigs are on the channel

you can say what you want about sm but they give work to most of their idols yearly, even the older and less relevant

all of this won't be possible under hybe, i fear

i'm incredibly sick of this narrative a lot of yall keep pushing that hybe will shelve all older sm artists just because they're past their peak/prime.

i can't believe people are actually chosing to defend a side in this sm/chris lee vs hybe/lsm bull**** when both sides are idiotic. :rip:

i understand being a "company stan" in the sense of liking/supporting many artists under one label but actually DEFENDING these corrupt companies (the entire entertainment industry in every country is corrupt so dont even start) is genuinely on the next level.mp3 of insanity and delusion.

there's a limit of 100 releases a company can put out yearly and hybe is already saturated with all of its artists and companies they tookover :skull:

now add sm and ALL of their artists. do you really think they'll favor ONEW out of anyone to fit the last slots over rv, nct or aespa? or even exo solos?

nobody is defending sm it's just funny that you chose to comment on onew's release in particular as if he won't be the first one to get gfriend'd

sm had 31 physical releases last year and is aiming for 41 this year. i highly doubt that the other artists/groups under hybe are gonna release 60+ albums ffs :rip: plus hybe and sm have their albums printed by different manufacturers.

the whole gfriend disbandment is a massive complicated mess (that we'll never know the full details of) and can't all be blamed on hybe ffs :deadbanana4:

:rip: Honestly a video presentation made SM executives look like they suck big time which is why a 70 yr old LSM ate them alive. I truly don't know why they expected LSM just to give up his own company when he still had this much power :rip:

I agree that Kakao will be better for SM but it would have been even better if they didn't attempt to sell SM in the first place and SM stayed independent. Especially considering LSM is already 70. The executive board is the only one to blame for this mess.

I know SK is a capitalistic hell and therefore corporations don't have to follow the law, but is it even legal for HYBE to become the major shareholder of SM? Don't they have antitrust laws or something? :deadbanana2:

I'm pretty sure HYBE would own like AT LEAST 80% of the kpop market if that happened

I've seen you posting a couple times and you even quoted me once and I'll reply to you now

I think you're dumb to think a company is not gonna do anything about someone literally stealing from them (to say the least)

imagine betraying your company, your shareholders and investors while expecting people to just ignore it, come on now

try to see this situation as a grown adult, not only as a k-pop stan

Edited by Tomek

The SM situation is giving early 2000s reality show drama. I don't stan any SM artists and even if I did, that has *** all to do with the corrupt corp making them slave away so I cannot fathom taking the side of a business. But anyway, I'm here with my popcorn eating this drama up. JYPE will be the only OT3 remaining and I'm cackling! The plastic pants did it!

I don't think you have to like or defend SM's management or decision-making to be against a comprehensive monopoly of the k-pop industry. HYBE and Kakao absolutely need to be restricted from throwing their weight around and acquiring other comparable companies, especially by (I'm pretty sure) illegal means - does Korea not have anti-trust laws, like, at all?

Imagine you're looking through SM youtube just trying to find an old girls generation video then that pops up :coffee:

Here's the thing to keep in mind.  Kakao is not a kpop company.  They make their profits selling software and IT services.  Their problem from a growth perspective is that they have not much of a footprint outside of Korea.  Other companies like Naver, SK, etc. have successfully expanded their software/IT brands outside of Korea while Kakao/Daum continue to do what they do best -- make mistakes.

The Chinese/Singaporean/Arabian investors in Kakao (Daum) look at it as a company with growth potential because their just-as-good software/IT services have failed to be deployed outside of Korea, and coattailing  a global consumer exporter like SM may expand their presence in other places.  To them, kpop is just a tentacle for the benefit of the main Kakao blob.

Hybe is a kpop company.  And through their deals with Warner Music, they've proceeded to start to kpop-ize the rest of the music industry.  And SM allows them direct access to things other entertainment consumables other than music, like drama production, movies, advertising, casual dining, resorts, etc. for Korea to get in on.

The Korean government will allow companies to combine to the detriment of their local consumer if it allows the new company to better compete on a global scale.  They've done it with cars, electronics, telecommunications, durable goods, engineering, chemicals, construction -- media would be just another sector.

But is it the correct strategy for the media business?  There's been some big media mergers that have blown up recently.  Hopefully a government crony bureaucrat will be able to figure out the correct course. :keir:
