They have the highest US stats for a 4th gen group so it's not just China. They carve out to a niche market so their fanbase is dedicated. Even Western market, there are some artists with big hits and weak fanbase and there are some with lower GP appeal but strong fanbase (Melanie Martinez as the latest example). Idk why this should be a surprise

Finally listened to Unforgiven (the album) and whew, it took me out! Very high quality!

 

I loved the mix of genres and (controversially) the inclusion of older songs. The release feels very J-pop because of these elements.

 

"Unforgiven" and "Eve, Psyche and Bluebeard's Wife" are so chic. Very Renaissance! "Antifragile" remains one of the best K-pop songs ever and "Fire in the Belly" is incredible. I hope they pull a Hitomi Shimatani and lean into Latin genres even more with future releases!

That might have something to do with it, but Karina is actually the most popular in China followed by Ningning. I think it’s more-so that their concept aligns well with trends in China. A lot of the K-Pop consumers tend to like girl crush a bit more than other girl group concepts (as why Blackpink is also massive there). China also has a really big video-gaming scene, which aligns well with aespa’s whole digital cyberpunk aesthetic.
