It really is quite clever. I’m already sick of the ongoing trend of samples that end up sounding like the artist is essentially covering the original with some new lyrics. 

 

Tbh as much as I love COAD as a whole, I’ve never been crazy about Hung Up for this reason. The ABBA sample is just a bit too prominent.

Sampling when it's done cleverly is great. The problem arises when sampling is done lazily as a crutch because the people involved lack the creativity to transform it into something radically different or use it in a smart way.

I truly believe Ava Max handled the ABBA sample in a more subtle way in Torn.

 

I mean you can she also got inspired by Hung Up but the all song doesn't rely on the ABBA's flute, but it's a nice background treat.

Has Kylie ever addressed this ? I wonder if the version that was sent to her was the one we all know (with the sample) or maybe was it different ?
