Yes...because that's a practice rooted in centuries of racism. Blackface predominantly comes from minstrel shows which was a way for white people to spread the narrative that black people were stupid, dangerous, violent, and a cancer on society. Anyone replicating that ideal is disgusting and deserving of the backlash.

Someone of color's skin being lightened is rooted in nothing but a simple decision on their part. That is not rooted in racism. Racism against white people does not exist, racism against the black community does.

I wish it was that simple but internalized racism is a thing too :(

That's very fair, I perhaps should've have phrased it that way! I know what I meant in my head, but it doesn't exactly read that. What I was attempting to say was that the decision to lighten one's skin is not based in the same sort of thing blackface is and it's incredibly silly to compare one against the other.

Absolutely not! Nicki has cultural impact on teens and 20 year olds in 2022. Madonna does not *hence* why Madonna has to book television interviews to remind the GP that she was once successful and inflating her stats to 400 million record sold :gaycat6:

I beg of y’all to learn that you can’t just expect the converse of something to be equal to the original - particularly when identity is involved. It’s like expecting the term colonizer to be equal to an actual slur against minorities.

Nicki may look lighter but she doesn’t look white in that picture. We can have a discussion about internalized colorism and it’s issues, or a conversation about the American beauty standard now prioritizes racial ambiguity, but that isn’t the same thing as saying that Nicki lightening herself in a picture is analogous to blackface - especially when antiblackness is at the root of both actions.

There’s also enough actual stuff to criticize Nicki for to where we don’t have to make half-baked comparisons based on a poorly edited picture.

BWHAHAHA who is that B trying to fool? :deadbanana2:

She looks so WHITE plus we know she has a big ol' bloated body :lmao:
