Whereas the argument that, even though 80% of Cardi's music isn’t played by pop outlets, she HAS to be a pop artist because her videos are colorful and her performances are flashy is super modern and contemporary  Kim broke that barrier 25 years ago

 

"Hot ****" is just another hip hop single by her that's perfectly in line with Bartier Cardi, Money, Press, Up, etc. I do not see a sound or image switch or an effort to appease the same audience that made her last single #1. It flopped because it wasn't good, not because Cardi went pop and was disconnected from her hip hop audience

But she has like much more access to resources than they do, and her label spends much more on her. It makes no sense to compare her to erica banks or flo milli. Those two arent even mainstream.

This argument that Nicki went pop and abandoned her audience is silly. She has always done pop-rap songs, even in her mixtapes. Newsflash, there's millions of black girls that listen to hip-hop music that arent street raps or just strait up pop-songs. Literally there are multiple countries in Africa outside the US that prefer her pop-rap songs, to  Megan's, latto's, or cardis music. Kanye's and Drake's music are hip-hop music, even though they're not predominantly urban raps. So i dont understand all these attempts to discredit her because she blended her music with pop-elements which dominated the mainstream then. If trap wasnt popular now, what do you think the rap girls would be doing? Was she supposed to release bodak yellow-like songs, while the radio was dominated with songs like Whats my name, poker face, california girls etc.... Are black women supposed to "stay in their lane" so as not to be discredited while artists like Ariana does Pop, trap, RnB, and gets praised for their versatility? Did she abandon her audience when she infused trap (which was the dominant sound then) in her music in 2018? Make it make sense

I don't know what all this is, cause I never said Nicki doing pop was inherently bad (although a lot of her output was tacky, but that's another convo). I just don't think the comparison between Nicki's career in 2012 and Cardi's current career was valid. Nicki started making an actual transition from pop to hip hop after her second album while Cardi never fully went pop and is pretty much continuing the sound and image she's had for years

You called it "disney pop". Again Nicki didnt make a transition to hip-hop, she was always hip-hop. She just made more urban hip-hop songs. I agree that whats going on with cardi is different.
