@conatus a random question but since you're a professional cinephile of sorts and studied Russian, what do you make of Soviet cinema? And another question: have you watched anything starring (plus written and directed by) Renata Litvinova?

Funnily enough, at one point I was going to make Soviet cinema my research area, actually. One of my undergrad dissertations was about Wings by Larisa Shepitko (looking at the representations of gender, age, and societal and political change in it), my final assignment for a final year undergrad Russian module was essentially about unpacking the problematics of the term "Soviet cinema," the way it instantly defaults to "Russian-language" and socialist realism for a lot of people, and the colonial implications of that, specifically looking at the works of Parajanov and Ashik Kerib as my case study.

I also have a big interest in propaganda cinema from around the world in its various forms so, obviously, a lot of Soviet-era cinema falls under that. There's a lot of Soviet-era films in general that I love - Letter Never Sent, Fragment of an Empire, The Cranes Are Flying, Ivan's Childhood, The Beginning (1970), Mother (1926), The Long Farewell, to name a few. I'm personally not as crazy about more commercial Soviet films, at least from what I have seen - Love and Pigeons, for example, is one I found especially abhorrent fjdkfkjafjk.

There's a few films starring Renata that I've been meaning to get to since forever but haven't got around to (The Tuner, It Does Not Hurt), but thus far, no, and that goes for films written and directed by her too. If you have any specific recommendations they're more than welcome!

That's interesting. I was mostly inquring about the mainstream ones to which I've developed quite an aversion, and it's difficult to discuss them with the people within the culture so an outside perspective would be welcome. There were definitely exciting things happening in the non-mainstream spaces, though I'm personally more interested in the late/post-Soviet reflections.

As for Renata, I actually find her kind of overrated as an actress because I've seen plenty of her interviews/TV work, and I don't see a significant distinction between her as a person and as an actress (not to mention the fact that most of her roles are just different shades of a femme fatale, though you could argue that it's not exactly a typical Russian archetype), but I'm no expert. I do think she's a fascinating personality, and the fact that she's in an 'open secret' relationship with Zemfira adds a lot to character (a queer icon who's queer herself). The films she's written have some merit to them, despite being severely undercooked. The North Wind in particular got a lot of praise, but I have to admit that I mostly liked the music (#ThankYouZemfira). Her Kira Muratova films (and Kira Muratova in general) are worth watching, I suppose. Her role in Three Stories is probably her signature one, and the film itself is a curious study of a post-Soviet psyche.

I imagine my Kira Muratovaphobia has finally worn off after absolutely hating Getting to Know the Big Wide World, so I'll look into it. Like I said, I like The Long Farewell, so it's not like she has a 100% miss rate for me

A friend I made when I was living in Moscow was a huge Zemfira fan, I'm surprised he never mentioned Renata. Lesbophobia maybe?

Not Soviet, just modern Russian but I did consider writing about Zoology (2016) for a Queer and Trans Theory module on my Master's. Have you seen it @Suilen? It's definitely rife for analysis through a queer lens in my opinion

I haven't watched it, but it does sound interesting. The fact that it has Alyona Sviridova's Pink Flamingo in the OST already adds certain implications.

I just bought iphone 17 pro orange. For years I waited for apple to bring colors to the pro line and they finally did it. Had every iPhone since the 7, always max model because of the battery but this year pro esim got a bump so it's fine. I feel like going from 16pm to 17 pro is okay upgrade, not the greatest cause 16pm is a beast of a device but it got boring quickly tho.
