Chroma flopped hard for the kind of success they tried to create for it. And the simple answer being: it wasn’t good enough for the GP.

Gaga was 12 years into her career and had 4 huge eras under her belt by the time Chromatica dropped. She was def an industry vet at the time and these arbitrary standards are even more delusional.

I think sadly since BTW, Gaga and her team focus more on securing a big debut week rather than making the album sell longterm. It’s frustrating, but hopefully they’ll realise they need to get out of this habit. It’s kind of embarrassing that one third of BTW’s overall pure sales come from its first week. Picking the right singles, and more than two is important. They seem to rely on one hit like Million Reasons, Applause, Shallow, Rain On Me and not bother to push another single.

Releasing jazz with Tony or a collab with Rolling Stones is certainly not for streaming but is a way to cement her in history. Everyone could have a random rapper/latin/whatever feat.

She went back to pop music for Chroma and it did nothing for her overall…

I would say it did pretty much to her career. 
 

Every single one of her albums is essential to her career. Yes, even ARTPOP. Let’s stay objective.

I don't disagree, but the reasons they weren't super successful are different. Her branding for years had been as an eccentric popstar and that's still a big part of what she's known as to regular people. While she had a massively successful AC release, a good chunk of people in and out of her fanbase don't look to her specifically for that type of music, hence her having multiple other AC releases that have performed more tepidly. While it's established that she's versatile, serious, talented, etc. a lot of people still primarily see her as a weird and flashy popstar, which isn't necessarily good or bad. And the AC audience she gained with ASIB is lucrative for jazz shows and stuff, but clearly isn't driving the bulk of her consumption. 

 

On the other hand, her fanbase imploded during Chromatica because of the messy rollout and the GP shrugged it off as generic and watered-down. It's lack of success wasn't because it was pop, but because it's been largely seen unfavorably against her previous pop releases.
