I'm so happy that "Thunder" is holding up so strong. (#7 now) Only two songs from all new releases made it to top 10 so far. I expected more but it's not the end.

Also, Katy really seems like she doesn't care about her career right now. Considering she's coming from pretty strong era I'd say (after "Roar" and "Dark Horse") and doing these tragic numbers (not only in terms of sales, but also streaming and basically radio too) it's not good.

I remember like 3 years ago everyone thought JB was over because of Journals and now everything he touches goes to the top

I mean even Bieber and Scooter thought he was over. That's why they did a rebranding, put him on Comedy Central, public charities etc... then they started a comeback campaign with Where Are Ü Now.

I think that a sign that anyone can have comeback even Mariah Carey, Aguilera or anyone.

No Bieber was just young enough to have a proper comeback and a musical reinvention. The likes of Mariah are too old to have anything remotely like that. Of course she could spring a big hit like Cher did with Believe. But the market is so youth orientated now with streaming. Radio ignores oldies. Oldies being anybody as young as 40.

I mean yeah, there was definitely a media rebranding. He was a hot mess in the tabloids. His stats, however, showed no signs he was done. Purpose was going to be marketed as a comeback regardless because of the length since Believe (2012-2015) and due to his negative media presence. The media ran the comeback narrative. It was still going to depend on the music and he transitioned very well.

 

Also WAUN took a minute to take off and I remember oldTRL screaming he was over at that time, too.

Journals started with that Music Monday thing where dropped a new song every week way back in like September/October that year. Then at the last minute they decided to group them all as a compilation for the Holidays. Sure they probably wanted bigger response from it, essentially a quick cash grab. But at that point fans had majority of the songs and why ruin his streak.

 

Mind you Believe Acoustic opened with 211k that same year, in the midst of him being dubbed over.

In a sense, but there were a unique set of circumstances for Bieber that made his career far from over. Primarily:

• Universal awareness and passion (be it hatred or admiration) for him as a persona.

It's just invaluable, really.

 

Plus, I'm not convinced Journals was really the misstep everyone wants to believe it was. It was never marketed or released traditionally because they knew it would under-perform, but it was an intentional step towards a more diverse sound.

this. also journals did what it needed to do in regards of his transition from a teeny bopper to an actual pop star. he gained a cult fanbase off that album which is why him making music like 'no sense' or 'i'm the one' doesn't seem off

Even during the Journals era he was shooting to #1 on itunes...they just didn't have much longevity

 

Heartbreakers would've easily debuted in the top 10 but it's one hour sales before the tracking period ended was so high and enough for it to be affected by split sales

Bieber was never over. He still had constant media presence and his fans never went anywhere lol. He just had to act like he cleaned up his act for him to have a hit. 

 

But genuinely despacito is a good song this dj Khaled song isn't I hope it doesn't go #1

The streaming era is what really pushed him to the top. He released Where Are You Now? And What Do You Mean at the perfect timing
