I think it has to do with star caliber. Foreign countries play English songs because most of the world's most famous artists make music in English. If Adele or Taylor or someone put out a song in another language radio would play it.

Also it's more likely that people in foreign countries speak/understand English than people in English speaking countries speaking/understanding a foreign language.

Of course WhiteTRL wouldn't see anything wrong with excluding non-English songs from Pop Radio :dies:

A song in Albanian smashed all over Europe last year, so the whole 'people don't understand it' argument is kind of nonsensical, but yeah, America is always fussy about non-American artists

Spanish is the second most spoken language in USA and is the 3rd most spoken language in the world... The same way, here in Latin America, people don't have a problem dealing with english songs they don't understand on radio, north american people can try to bare with it as well :cm:

It may be the second most spoken but that statistic is deceptive presented that way, given that only 12% of the population in the US speaks it.

Plus Latin America and other areas of the world are immersed in North American culture far more than we are with them. Movies, TV, music, everything is imported to foreign countries while in NA it's much less in terms of reach and impact, although it does exist. We have Spanish and Latin stations that are increasing their reach. Plus another important factor is a lot of Spanish speakers in NA are localized to the coasts, and specifically the west coast, so it's not likely a Spanish-language song will break out nationwide.

I'm not saying it is optimal, it would be cool for Non-English songs to break out, it's just that there are cultural and sociological reasons why it's less likely to happen in NA than the reverse scenario for Latin America and others areas of the world.

Being hyperbolic about the situation and labeling it as xenophobic is kind of ridiculous.

And they do well here because radios play them non-stop :biblio:

If US radios played spanish songs as english songs get played here in Latin America, trust me, they would do well...

"Stay" hasn't had a green update since the video release. It needs to get the #1 ASAP.

It isn't xenophobic but American people have no ears for tropical genres.

They wouldn't know how to dance a song like Despacito and play in on their radios would be a waste since they wouldn't understand it.

I need Bruno to go back to the top.

So it's xenophobia when we don't play songs like Despacito but "we are local" when other countries don't play Urban hits?

Urban music is pretty popular here. Drake, Rae Sremmurd and many more are pretty known in Venezuela.

Their music is played on radios on a daily basis.

US also has more genres mainstream than these other countries.

Pop, Country, Rap, R&B, Rock/Alternative, and Dance/EDM are big in US and all spawn Platinum albums.  We don't play other languages but there's lots of variety. I don't see R&B, Country, and Rap albums going Platinum in these European/Latin countries.

Jazz & Latin albums also went Diamond in US. I wanna know when a Jazz album went Diamond in Latin America, or a Latin album went Diamond in Europe.

Playing different languages isn't the only form of diversity. Hell, even Weird Al Yankovic went #1 on Billboard 200 in 2014 with a Comedy album. :toofunny2:

Have you heard of Usher and Eminem? They were/are pretty big in Latin America and Europe. Drake is big too.

Latin American stations play Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Reggaeton plus the folkloric music of each country, and we have to make room for all the Pop, Rock/Alternative, Rap, R&B, Dance/EDM music that comes in english :cm:

I'm pretty sure Shakira's and Gloria Estefan album sales were big in Europe, especially Spain, Italy, Portugal and France. Ricky Martin in his prime too. And isn't Julio Iglesias a selling beast? Especially in Spain and other countries of Europe?

Anyway, I find pretty xenophobic the fact that US radio stations boycott the chart run of many non-english songs that do well in other metrics and even better than most north american songs (see: Gangnam Style)

2-3 artists doing well /=/ the genre as a WHOLE doing well in a country.

And yes, Latin artists sold a lot in European countries where the population hugely speaks Spanish, but what about UK, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, etc?

There's only one European country that speaks Spanish - Spain :cm:

Bailando went top 10 in Italy, Poland, Belgium, Finland, Italy (year-end #1), Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Switzerland and El Perdón did similarly as well

Chantaje was a top 20 hit in Spain, Bulgaria, Portugal, Switzerland, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands

Danza Kuduro was one of the biggest hits of the year in Europe, peaking at #1 in Austria, Germany, Czech Republic, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and top 5 in Norway, Hungary, Denmark, Sweden, Finland

Even Gasolina, which is a huge classic went top 10 in most European countries (even the UK), while only peaking at #32 in the US. Same with La Camisa Negra, which went top 10 across Europe and it only peaked at #89 in the US.

So nope, it's not just 'a few Latin artists' that sell here. Spanish music is pretty dominant all across Europe, even though it is only spoken in Spain.

Bailando was a huge in America too, Chantaje was a moderate hit (it'll probably reach Gold/Platinum in US, similar certification to every country in Europe that isn't Spain/Italy), Gasolina is also a WELL known song in America the Hot 100 just wasn't geared towards non-R&B/Hip-Hop in that period.

Santana's Supernatural sold 12 million copies in US and has only been outsold by a The Beatles greatest hits album since. Selena's Dreaming of You also had the biggest debut after Michael Jackson's album the year it was released.

Europe does have more Spanish-speaking hits, but US tends to be a touring spot for huge Latin artists too. Romeo Santos does arenas, Enrique Iglesias does arenas. Latin artists have had some good success in US, even if it wasn't reflected on Hot 100.

& Portugal is essentially a Spanish country in terms of the convo. If they can understand Spanish, ofcourse, Spanish music would do well there.

poor non-globally diverse in this thread. despacito is a bop.

so many latin bops in the past year.

Despacito was already trash, now with Justin Bieber added is even WORSE :mazen:

7 hours ago, DELE2125 said:

That's because xenophobic countries like the US won't give airplay to full spanish songs :cm:

It's not really a fair comparison. If Pop, Rhythmic, HAC, etc had supported "Despacito" like all their songs on power rotation, it wouldn't have needed that TRAGIC Bieber remix.

it's a bop. jb is coming for his song of the summer 3rd year in a row :alexz:
