FLO admit they're 'hard to work with' : "We own it!"
And the fact that you can't hear even a hint of them being 3 girls from the UK in any of their music is part of the reason they haven't caught on. Nothing is believable about singing like they're from Atlanta and then speaking with South London accents to a 2026 audience. They just give over-styled, "tribute to 2000s r&b" vibes without having any identity of their own. Raye, Jorja Smith and Olivia Dean all sound like themselves in their music, which is why they have steady careers in 2026. Flo are talented singers and sure, deserved their shot, but it's been 5 years. It's not happening.

Why was there a version of Check it out with Cheryl?
We're almost arriving at the same conclusion just via different routes atp. I never said she was anything like a pariah. I'm saying the fickle GP attitude towards her was starting to turn alongside of the press, and that she certainly was not at the peak of her powers. That was a couple of years prior. The multiple Katy Perry concerts she was booed at are a simple reflection of that. Luckily, she still had media backing in the form of access to the strongest promo gigs going and a pretty devoted core fanbase to keep releasing music worthwhile for a few years yet. That's literally it.

Why was there a version of Check it out with Cheryl?
11 is... not huge lol, but being from BEP is what does the heavy lifting here. If Cheryl was such a huge advantage to the track, she would have at least been pushed it into the top 10. Her singles weren't performing particularly strongly atp besides the debuts hitting #1 for a week, and that was largely due boost from media attention and always getting the biggest promo opportunities on offer. Of course collabs/associations are always somewhat mutually beneficial, but Will absolutely would have got that Voice gig by himself. The BBC would never have passed off the opportunity to have such a worldwide hitmaker on their panel (even if his peak had passed), and the UK is always the next best place for North American stars to market themselves once their profiles have slipped in the US. The 'international' element provides exclusivity they don't have at home (just ask The Pussycat Dolls, Michael Bublé, Kelly Rowland). This has nothing to do with Cheryl. He still did more for her than she ever could for him. She was definitely booed every time she was mentioned on this tour except in Newcastle, there just aren't many videos left now as it was 15 years ago. Here's another example at 0:46 though, and we're not just gonna put this down to misogyny/stan wars. Cheryl and Katy never had a rivalry, nor did their stans. It was a GP thing.

Pitchfork: Tyla is replacing Rihanna; Tyla retweets
True but this mainly started when she made that comment about not considering herself black a few years ago (because it's not how she's perceived in SA). People have been attitude-policing her every time she's opened her mouth since and it's getting weird.

Why was there a version of Check it out with Cheryl?
I really don't think Cheryl had anything to offer Will.I..Am in 2010. Will had just come off BEP's E.N.D. era which was absolutely massive on an international scale. Nicki didn't have a huge pop hit yet but she was definitely an up-and-coming name to watch, while Cheryl was becoming a little stale in the UK. Having her on the song was unnecessary overload and made no sense. I remember talking about it in school and people thinking it was weird. She didn't slot into it naturally and you couldn't even tell she was on it without the video. If it was a supposed 'favour' to Will it was poorly judged. Lowkey the UK press was also just starting to turn on her in the way that it often does when they need a new story. It mainly started after her divorce. The public were also just getting bored of her and starting to realise that beyond the fanfare and glamour she didn't have all that much to offer. I remember when Katy Perry was on tour in the UK 2011, she would often mention Cheryl onstage (probably expecting applause) and the audience would boo. I don't really don't blame her for trying to make it in the US. The UK has such a ceiling and there's nowhere to hide when things get rough.

Pitchfork: Tyla is replacing Rihanna; Tyla retweets
People dragging this girl for not falling at the feet of every millennial MPG when this is exactly the kind of thing Rihanna would have retweeted at her peak.

Sam Smith's Bedtime Stories era is flopping, why?
Ultimately, `I don't get who any of this is meant to appeal to. Somewhat like Miley, they just seem to release whatever they feel like with zero thought into connection/progression between projects or target demographic. Their choice but the result will inevitably be a flop catalogue with maybe the occasional unicorn hit.

Why was there a version of Check it out with Cheryl?
Her reception around her in the UK was becoming increasingly negative at this point and her team were trying their hardest to push her into the US market. This was a bizarre attempt to make her look more US-affiliated to the UK... when the truth was absolutely no one on the US knew her. This version wasn't even released there. Will.I..Am just had this odd infatuation with her (still don't quite get if it was sexual or..?) around of the height of BEP's fame, he had clearly told Cheryl she could be huge US star and she let it get to her head.

Thoughts on stans who only ever talk about numbers and never the content...?
They "stan" the artists that they stan mainly because they are popular and if they didn't have the achievements they have they probably wouldn't care for them at all. Like, I'm on ATRL because I enjoy discussing and dissecting popular music and culture. Admittedly a pastime that achieves nothing but that's fine. We all have them. Grown adults, however, parasocially fighting endless battles on behalf of people they don't know, around topics that don't actually matter, is top-tier loser behaviour and I have to remind myself of just how brainless these morons are every time I accidentally end up in debate with them that I foolishly thought could be reasonable and balanced. The intention here isn't to sound nasty, but if I can be blunt: it's mainly due to personal insecurity. People want to feel as though they're on the "winning team" by stanning a popular artist, most likely due to having very little to celebrate in their personal lives in terms of popularity or achievement, so they cling to this idea that they're connected to a performer who has (or once had) a high level of popularity in order to try and forget about how f*cking pathetic they are.

When u look past the glow they added to her silhouette and see how dead behind the eyes she looks in this photo. And sad. They completely took her spirit in FF era.

Drugstore fragrances. I still see her old ones and even Beyoncé Heat (must be 20 years old) out and about occasionally. There's a market somewhere.
