ARIANA. I don't think any Ari album has hit this quickly for me. Somehow these soundscapes remind me of the Love Me Harder video; warm orange haze that obscures your sense of time and place. I know that realistically all most of the pop girls have this left-field/artistic side to them, but I think the pressures of an insane entertainment industry and fame and capitalism complicates that. It's astounding to see someone as successful as Ariana Grande be unapologetically creative and in love with her craft. Like, wow. We're lucky.

IDK I have hope for the album! Even if BYL is a bit of a rushed collab, LS is better (and I Feel So Free washes most of her output 2010-onward to be fair). That said, I feel like older artists have a different mentality towards singles than current pop girls and that shows in the rollout of this album. Like, M came up in an era where getting a radio hit was the ultimate album promo, and it feels like she's chasing that with BYL — as opposed to just dropping the full body of work and counting on her fans/name to stream — which leads to singles that are a bit less interesting than the full album. I mean I'm just speculating, maybe it will be full of BYLs.. but I think M still has smth better up her sleeve

none of these are points. you are just describing the realities of a changing market for music. like, look up how many tours grossed $200mil+ before 2005 (which is the era that Britney toured in). not many! it was a different industry! tickets did not cost as much as they do now bc greedy billionaire parasites like Taylor hadn't enshittified the industry quite yet; artists made their money from selling music instead of gauging soccer moms for $2000 nosebleed tickets. Taylor isn't making more money because of popularity, it's because she has an insane profit margin. secondly, it is very rare for an artist that has been inactive for almost the entire streaming era to have an album chart for more than a year. when Britney was recording and releasing music of her own volition, the charts measured sales, not streams. a completely different metric! charts tracked initial interest; today, they track sustained consumption — when you stream, you help an album chart, so the BB200 measures what people are currently listening to. back in the day, it was measuring what people bought. a fan could listen to BOMT every single day, but that didn't reflect the album's success as far as the BB200 was concerned. this is also why you see so many longest-running #1 records broken in the streaming era. it's much easier to do now, because every listen counts. then again, you called norah jones a fad, so that kind of tells us all we need to know about your perception of music history... but I digress!

I don't think they're saying that mass appeal is a bad thing. to me, criticisms like these have more to do with taylor's apparent pursuit of popularity above all else. like, is "consumption" the holy grail of art-making? i know it's subjective, but to me, measuring art in terms of numbers feels hollow. when we talk about great artists, we note the ways in which they've shaped their craft. look at bob dylan bringing poetry into rock music, Michael Jackson positioning pop eras as performance art and setting the standard for music videos, or Cher introducing autotune to the mainstream — these artists were wildly successful, to be sure, but they secured their legend status because they reimagined the rulebook and pushed the narrative forward. Taylor has made an impact of her own, but it's more related to marketing than music. her limited edition voice notes and exclusive target tracks have opened doors for music execs to increase profits. maybe that's a good legacy, maybe not — time will be the ultimate truth teller
