The reason avi sizes are the way they are is because of the people uploading 300MB avis. 

Avis can be 200 x 200

Size 4.5 MB (6 MB if you’re ATRL+)

It's always a good idea to upload avis at a bigger size than 150x150 because the exact size may lead to a slight loss of quality, I think? The forum also tends to reduce their brightness, so I personally amp it up a bit.

I upload mine at 400 x 400 and reduce it to fit the dimensions.

I remember in Classic ATRL, there was that one user who had an avi of a woman running through a maze and it lasted for like twenty seconds or something. Avi sizes were crazy back then.
